Is being a ballerina a good career?

Being a Ballerina is a demanding career and a demanding job, but most ballerinas agree that it is utterly worth it. Once moved from an apprentice to be a contracted member. Classes usually are in the morning, then rehearsal through the afternoon into the evening, and performances are usually at night, so a dancer might leave the theater at midnight. So it is a full-time job and sometimes even more demanding than one.

The salary of a professional ballet dancer with a company depends greatly on the dancer’s ranking. Principal dancers are the ones that make the most money, their salaries can range from fifty thousand per year up to one hundred and fifty thousand per year. Apprentices on the other hand can make up to eight hundred per week or thirty-two thousand a year. Most companies only pay an average of forty thousand to sixty thousand per year.

What age should you start Ballet?

There is no specific age that one can say is the perfect age to start Ballet. Just like with most disciplines, starting at an earlier age might give you an advantage and a more direct and natural relationship with your craft, but in general, one cannot say with certainty that starting at an earlier age is a good thing. Someone starting Ballet at age three or five might lose interest relatively soon since at age three or five we are not really sure what we like or dislike just yet, especially when it comes to something that we will do on a regular basis.

If you are hesitating because of your age, one good way of looking at this conflict of age is to consider that time will continue to pass, and if you were hesitant to start at thirteen, for example, once you turn twenty-five and you still have not started, well those are twelve years of dancing and that is a lot of learning and a lot that one can do, and those twelve years were lost because of hesitation. The same example then applies to someone who is twenty-five, hesitating and waiting until they are thirty-five and then another ten years have passed. So if you are interested in starting Ballet lessons, be sure to go out and look for groups or teachers. If you are in San Jose and you would like to find a private Ballet teacher, visit Superprof and find the Ballet teacher that fits you best.

Does Ballet change your body?

Ballet will not make you any taller than you are, but Ballet can stretch your legs out and your limbs out and it can give you a look that is much longer and leaner. The key to Ballet and its workout is targeting the muscles that a Ballerina uses in most moves and its everyday training, that is your inner thigh, the back of the leg and your butt. For example, for a person with naturally bulky muscles, avoiding straining the quadriceps is key to the overall look, and core exercises such as abdominal exercises lead to that Ballerina poise.

However, sports physiologists would argue that genetics plays the biggest role and that no matter how much we try one may never achieve the limbs and body shape of a ballerina that was born with that physique. Doing certain types of exercises one might be able to make themselves longer and leaner for that person, but someone with the body of a true prima ballerina is very genetically different than a lot of other people. So there’s no scientific evidence that we can change our body type, but with the right exercises, we might get closer to our ideal.
