Ballroom dancing is a partner dance where couples move rhythmically using step patterns while expressing the characteristics of the music. It consists of two styles which are the smooth and standard or the rhythm and Latin. The smooth and standard style focuses on elegance, grace, and fluidity of movement which can be seen in Disney movies such as Beauty and the Beast. Dancers move across the entire dance floor as they rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. The Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep are all danced in this manner.
On the other hand, the Rhythm and Latin style focuses on displaying high energy and personal flair. The couple usually dances in one spot on the dance floor and sticks to the rhythm of the music. Some of these styles include the East Coast Swing, Jive, Rumba, Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo, Samba, and Paso Doble. We highly suggest you watch videos of each and every one of these styles for you to decide which of them you like best and which you would like to learn yourself.
Taking Latin ballroom lessons will change your life forever and bring you a lot of joy in many different ways. First of all, it’s a great way to be social, meet new people, and build a community of ballroom dancing lovers. You can even consider signing up for a ballroom dancing competition with a partner and preparing for the adventure of a lifetime. Think of it as dancing with the stars, you are pushing yourself to the limit while having the time of your life and dancing your heart away.
Latin ballroom lessons will positively impact your health since dancing is proven to prevent dementia by 76% and it also decreases blood pressure, aids in weight management, and lowers heart disease. Better yet, it will increase your mental capacity by memorizing choreography and being able to think on your feet. If anything Latin ballroom is great for all ages, but extremely beneficial to middle-aged individuals. And of course, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your dance skills and become the next bell of the ball as you dance endlessly with a partner.Â
Working on your ballroom dancing skills can be a lot of fun, but if you’re looking to improve your skills and technique then here are a few things you can do. Consider taking lessons from a qualified instructor so you can learn the best moves from an experienced and qualified individual. They should be able to provide you with proper technique, footwork, and styling that is specific to Latin ballroom dancing. Your next step would be to stay consistent and set aside time each week or day to practice the steps or movements taught in class. The more comfortable you become, the easier it will be for you to execute the choreography.
We also recommend you watch videos of professionals and study the way they move and their footwork. You can even attend live dance events such as competitions in order for you to witness how other dancers work the energy in the room and stay in sync with their partners. You may even want to try recording yourself and watching it back to understand what you are doing wrong or in which areas you can improve your technique. Lastly, watch your posture and footwork as they are essential in executing graceful and controlled movements.
For some people, it takes years for them to perfect ballroom dancing, but it really depends on the person and their level of commitment. If you are someone that is practicing on a daily basis and sign up for a competition then you are going to catch on very quickly. Especially because a dance competition requires you to properly prepare which will have you dancing away with your partner on a daily basis. Perhaps it will only take you a year to become a great ballroom dancer and win your first competition, but once again it depends on your enthusiasm for the art.
However, if you are simply doing it for fun then don’t even worry about how quickly you can master Latin ballroom dancing. Instead, focus on having a good time, and enjoy the process of learning something new and exciting. If anything you’ll be so fascinated by the beauty of it all that you’ll be making great progress without even realizing it. One day you’ll just wake up for your class and have what it takes to put on a great Latin ballroom dancing performance.
