About Lydia
I am a twenty year old student at the University of Bristol. I study Liberal arts, which means I am able to study English, Theology, French, History, Creative Writing and Philosophy all in one degree. As you can glean from that, I have a deep love for learning, and I find that tutoring is another form of learning for me. The more I learn about how my students think and learn, and the more questions they ask, the more I learn about my subject, and about the process of learning itself.
I studied illustration at art school for a year before coming to University, and enjoy integrating visual communication with my lessons. I am very interested in how art and the visual can be brought into learning and memory more.
I find it very rewarding being able to break knowledge down and build it back up for students. Being able to watch my students progress and understand things makes me truly joyful, especially while I build personal relationships with them based on mutual respect. I also love having the opportunity to stay in touch with subjects that I no longer study, such as Maths and Chemistry. I really enjoyed all of my subjects at GCSE and was upset at the prospect of having to narrow them down. Being able to continuously connect with, understand and teach subjects that so inspired me allows me to expand my breadth of knowledge even wider. Not only this, but I am now able to understand the foundations of the subjects that I do study, and draw connections between my teaching at school level and my learning at university level.

I achieved a 9 at GCSE English Language, an 8 in English Literature, and an A* in A-Level English Literature.
I study English and Creative writing at university now and it has always felt natural to me. While in the beginning of my tutoring, this made it more difficult for me to teach (as I had to interrogate my own skills to teach them to others), I have been tutoring since I was 17, and have learnt as much from my students as (hopefully) they have learnt from me.
When it comes to students who struggle with English, I find that close readings of short passages can be helpful to make analysis more manageable, and writing down messy brainstorms can be helpful for those who struggle with the process of editing and organising their thoughts at the same time as thinking them.
However, each student is different. Sometimes it helps to apply certain rules to the reading of texts when working with students with a more left-sided brain or students who can spiral into disorganised thought. Sometimes the approach focuses around structure, and editing thought down, sometimes it is about breaking out of structure. Sometimes, students find that they really just need someone to discuss and develop their ideas with, as speaking them out loud allows their ideas to fall into a natural essay structure.
With creative writing, I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I was raised with an author for a father, and am currently taking a creative writing unit at university. The best way to decide if I am right for you in this capacity is to message me personally and we can have a discussion, as creative writing is a very individual practice.
As a student who has struggled with ADHD and who has been practicing CBT for 3 years, I try to understand how students think about things, what helps them to remember (whether it be visual exercises, acronyms, metaphor, question and answer, mind maps etc.), and to adjust to help them meet their needs. My lessons are usually around an hour long, but that is a very flexible factor.

Lydia is a great tutor! She has a ton of experience working with kids and is always so kind and caring. She has such a wide range of knowledge across different subject areas and will be able to give lots of help with studying and revising!
Lydia is a wonderfully creative thinker. She is deeply caring and optimistic, and applies these characteristics to her teaching methods. Naturally inquisitive and engaging, Lydia will make learning a genuine pleasure for any of her students - it is difficult not to enjoy time in her company, even when spent working at subjects a child may find difficult. Lydia is also naturally very sensitive and would approach teaching with care and adaptability, coaching every child according to their needs and strengths.
Lydia is a friendly, funny and kind person who is an excellent tutor. She is patient, explains things clearly, and the students she has taught really appreciate her teaching style. I recommend Lydia as a trustworthy, reliable and generous person.
