About Malia

As a Linguistics major and Educational Psychology minor at The University of Texas at Austin, graduating this spring, I bring an academic foundation in language and learning to my tutoring. My studies have given me a deeper understanding of how language is structured, how people acquire and process it, and how different approaches to learning can help students succeed.

I am passionate about multicultural learning and believe that language is more than a set of rules—it is a way to connect with people, understand different perspectives, and explore the world. Through my travels and my advanced proficiency in Spanish, I have developed a strong appreciation for the nuances of language and the challenges and rewards of learning to communicate across cultures.

I strive to create a welcoming, supportive, and personalized learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring new ideas, and building confidence in their abilities. My goal is to help every student develop a genuine understanding of language while making meaningful progress toward their individual goals.

My approach to teaching English is rooted in understanding language rather than simply memorizing rules. As a linguistics major specializing in phonetics and semantics, I draw on my knowledge of how language works to help students understand not only how English is used, but why. I focus on developing a deeper understanding of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, meaning, and communication, allowing students to apply what they learn naturally and confidently.

Each lesson is highly customizable and tailored to the student's individual goals, interests, learning style, and current level. Depending on their needs, lessons may include guided discussions, practical exercises, pronunciation practice, analysis of everyday language, or a deeper exploration of linguistic concepts. I aim to make complex ideas accessible and engaging, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and active participation rather than relying on rote memorization.

What sets me apart is my ability to approach English through the lens of linguistics, connecting the theory behind language to its practical use in everyday life.
