Monday to Wednesday: After 5pm-9pm

Thursday to Friday: After 6:15pm-9pm

Saturdays and Sundays: Flexible, but must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance

Hi, I’m Alice, and I’m an English Tutor passionate about helping kids regain their confidence, especially after the knock many took during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the past six years, I’ve worked in and out of educational settings, and I’ve seen firsthand how children's self-belief has dwindled. It’s become my mission to change that.

Kids today face immense pressure, especially with the rise of social media, which turns life into a constant comparison game. I’ve noticed that many would rather not try at all than risk getting it wrong. I want to change this mindset and help them understand that making mistakes is just part of the learning journey.

My drive to improve unconfident readers also comes from my experience with my 11-year-old stepdaughter. We've lived together for three years, and in that time, her reading score has shot up from an underwhelming 64% to a solid 98%. Seeing her confidence grow has fueled my passion for supporting other children in the same way.

I’m here to help your child discover their potential and build the confidence they need to succeed. Together, we can turn learning into an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Let's make mistakes, learn, and celebrate achievements along the way.

About the lesson

Welcome! As an English Tutor, my goal is to help students continually move forward, fostering confidence and development without looking back. My approach is designed to support learners of all ages and abilities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding and mastery of the English language.

Teaching Methodology

I believe in a progressive teaching methodology that emphasizes continuous forward momentum. This approach not only boosts confidence but also ensures steady academic and personal growth. By focusing on each student's individual needs, I create a learning environment that is both supportive and challenging.

Phonics Focus

For both Primary and Secondary students, my phonics instruction goes beyond mere pronunciation. I emphasize the meaning of words and their context, helping students understand and use vocabulary effectively. This holistic approach ensures that students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the English language.

Innovative Techniques

To aid in reading comprehension, I employ innovative techniques such as Readers Theatre and Vocabulary Tiers. These methods make learning interactive and engaging, helping students improve their reading skills while enjoying the process.

GCSE Preparation

When preparing for GCSEs, I focus on breaking down questions accurately and thoroughly. Sessions include memorising quotes, understanding literary techniques, and proofreading practice questions. This comprehensive preparation ensures students are well-equipped to excel in their exams.

Lesson Structure

Primary Aged Children (aged 8-11): Lessons range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, tailored to your child's concentration span. Shorter, more frequent sessions throughout the week are more effective than one long session.

Secondary Students (aged 11-16): Sessions of 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes are optimal, providing ample time for focused exam preparation and revision.

Qualifications and Experience

I hold an A Level in English Literature and studied Drama in my undergraduate degree, which included modules on scriptwriting and classic Shakespeare. My Master's Degree in Creative Writing has given me deep insights into modern literature. Currently, I work in a public High School, analysing reading data of our lowest-level readers and delivering unique interventions tailored to their needs. This includes support for underprivileged students, those with SEND, and English as a second language learners.
