About Franciscus
Math is my favorite subject in the world, and I’d like to make it yours, too!
I’m a mathematics tutor with over 15 years of experience working one-on-one and with small groups of students, both privately and through tutoring organizations. I hold a master’s degree in mathematics and have published research in category theory, but more importantly, I genuinely enjoy working with students and helping them feel comfortable with challenging ideas. I tutor students from middle school through college (and beyond!) with a particular interest in advanced, enrichment-oriented material.
From 2020–2023, I taught math at Crossroads Upper School in Santa Monica, where I worked with high school students in concept-driven courses that emphasized understanding and reasoning over rote memorization. My experience in the classroom strongly shapes my tutoring: I try to meet students where they are, slow things down when needed, and make difficult material feel approachable rather than intimidating.
In addition to providing help with the standard middle and high school math curriculum, I offer personalized courses in advanced topics, including:
- set theory and logic
- vector spaces and linear transformations
- group theory and abstract algebra
- number theory
- real and complex analysis
- topology and algebraic topology
- differential geometry
- graph theory
- category theory
I believe that curious, motivated young students can begin learning advanced mathematics much earlier than they are typically given the opportunity to do so in schools, and I love helping students develop mathematical maturity through exploring these exciting subjects.
Students and families often tell me that my tutoring style is patient, warm, and nonjudgmental. I work hard to create an environment where it’s safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and think out loud, and I’ve been awarded with a certificate as a “Superstar — Most Requested by Families” instructor at a local Mathnasium.
