About Mahsen

My dream has always been to be a top engineer in my country (Iraq) and one of the top engineers of the Middle East, both in science and education. Even in the midst of the challenges and obstacles presented by politics and war, I have insisted on completing my goal.
I worked hard to accomplish my dream of finishing my high school with scores of A+ for my own satisfaction and so that my family would be proud of me. This enabled me to join one of the best colleges of engineering my country: University of Technology. In 2002, I joined as an engineering student in the department of electrical power and computer engineering. Even though electrical engineering was not a common choice for females, I chose it to challenge myself, to prove to others I can accomplish this and to serve as a part of the engineering society. The challenges made me stronger and stronger until I was one of the best students in the school: third place in my department and sixth place for the college as a whole.
Despite the complications and sufferings which increased more and more due to the terrorist war in my country, the daily kidnappings and killings, and other struggles, I did not stop. After graduating, I accepted a position at the University of Technology to keep pursuing my dream of being counted as one of the most successful women of my field and country and to never stop being an active member of society. I started working as a lab engineer assisting the lab instructor in a variety of engineering labs including analog electronics, Microprocessor 8085, Control, MATLAB, and C++ labs. I also participated in C++ and electronic circuits quire (what does quire mean? If this is the correct word, please simply delete this note).
In 2013, I got a scholarship from my country’s HCED (Higher Committee Education Development) for a Master’s degree in electrical engineering in the US at the University of Kentucky (UK). In 2018 I successfully finished my Master’s Degree in Power-Electronics with a GPA of 3.8. My thesis addressed improving stability in dc-dc converters wherein I constructed a model in Simulink/Matlab under my mentor Dr. Cramer.
While pursuing my Master’s degree at UK, in 2018 I enjoyed working under Dr. Lumpp as a teaching assistant for the first-year engineering program within the College of Engineering. Additionally, in 2017 I realized a dream by joining the UK Solar Car (team? Project? One word is needed). Further, I joined the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Off campus, I worked as a volunteer in the Glendover Elementary School helping the children inside the classroom and at the career fair. (Is this wording correct? Or did I misunderstand?)
I achieved part of my dream by getting my master’s degree at the University of Kentucky, and I hope to achieve another important part by finishing my PhD in electrical engineering at the [name of University]. An important reason that I want to finish my PhD degree here is that the technology in my field is developing very rapidly and in the US this technology is already impressively developed. [name of University] has excellent laboratories and equipment that help researchers to develop their skills, and has large libraries which enrich with thousands of the latest references, books and projects that support my major. For all the above-maintained reasons, it's my dream to get my PhD degree from one of the most famous universities not only in the United States but in the world, which is [name of University].
I love [city name] because of [state name]’s natural beauty, kind people, and safety. I also hope to study here to improve my English skills; the English language is the mother of the International language of the world and the US is the source of this language. There is another thing that is interesting for me, which is observing the variety of people, cultures, and races of people who live together in one country truly as a melting pot.
When I achieve my Ph.D. at [name of University], I will be proud of myself, and will earn the respect of my family and my children. I look forward to joining the [name of University] for my Ph. D. studies.
