When I tutor, I first explain the concepts of the lesson. Next, I give an example. When I give an example, I explain not just how to do something, but why I do it. I think this is especially important for learning. I find that for most math students, they have more trouble figuring out how to approach a problem than they do applying a concept that they learned in class. For example, if I were explaining how to solve x^2-3x+1=0, I would say, “Since I have an x^2 term, I know I’m dealing with a quadratic. With quadratics, we have two options to solve algebraically: factor or quadratic formula. I’m going to try factoring first, since that is generally easier, but in this case, this doesn’t factor. So I will solve using the quadratic formula.”
