About Kori
I am currently a graduate student in historical musicology at McGill, where I study the history of music and math. Prior to moving here, I went to undergrad at Oberlin Conservatory in the US and Oxford University in the UK. I also served two years teaching with Americorps in Cleveland, OH.
In 2018, I became handicapped. Very long story short, I had to relearn how to do everything, from walking to talking. And especially reading. Had it happened to me at a younger age, I might have moved on and chosen a new career path. However, someone somewhere years ago instilled in me a passion and a drive for what I do and I'm so thankful that they did because otherwise I wouldn't have known to fight for what I was losing. Learning and studying to me is akin to breathing; it's the light that fills my day.
And so I opened a book and began to retype. And retype. I retyped until McGill saw that fire in me and took a chance. I teach because I want to be that "someone somewhere years ago" for you. Your fire may look different from mine, but I'm here to help you find it.

I have experience teaching 5th-11th grade, but am comfortable working with all ages. My training as an educator was through Americorps, and as such, my methods and ideologies reflect a growth mindset and strive to reinforce the pillars of social and emotional learning. My lesson plans vary depending on the goals and needs of my scholars. Typically, if my scholar is a bit older, I would spend the first session discussing these goals as well as gauging where my scholar is at and then present a game-plan for them to approve/tweak.
Regardless, my first priority is to find a way to fuel your passion! In 2018 I became handicapped and lost the ability to read, and today I am working on my master's thesis in the Renaissance/Medieval history of music as a mathematical discipline. I want to show my scholars what I love about reading and writing, and hopefully inspire their own search for academic passion along the way.
