About Brenda
I’m Brenda, and I'm from Hong Kong. I specialize in teaching Mandarin to students with diverse backgrounds—from absolute beginners to advanced learners, and especially those who speak Cantonese. My approach is practical and patient: I use contrastive analysis to help Cantonese speakers navigate Mandarin’s four tones, retroflex sounds, and neutral tone, while building on shared vocabulary. For mixed-level classes, I design tiered activities and peer-learning moments so everyone progresses at their own pace. I’d assess each student’s Mandarin level and Cantonese fluency. For absolute beginners, I’d start with pinyin and tone pairs, using hand gestures to mark pitch. With Cantonese speakers, I’d highlight shared vocabulary (e.g., “gwo” → “guò”) but drill tricky Mandarin sounds like “zh, ch, sh” and the neutral tone.
In mixed classes, I’d split into leveled groups for 15 minutes of targeted work: beginners practice tones, intermediates build sentences, advanced learners read short paragraphs. Then I’d bring everyone together for tone bingo or minimal-pair listening games.
I’d also use parallel texts (Cantonese characters vs. simplified Mandarin) and encourage peer help—Cantonese speakers often intuitively correct each other’s tones. Regular quick checks keep pacing right for everyone.
