About Thomas
Hi! I’m Tom, 31, from London. I’m a native English speaker with a passion for linguistics, etymology and lexicography. English is unique among languages in that it’s a blend of about five other languages as the British Isles were invaded so many times! That gives it the largest vocabulary of any language in the world and its prevalence across the world has led to huge variety of dialects and slang. All in all I find it absolutely fascinating and love sharing my enthusiasm and knowledge for the spoken and written forms of English and its variants! I hope I can learn something from your own language or dialect too! I’ve got vast experience writing at a very high level in numerous fields (marketing, academic, professional, government, speech-writing, fiction) and can provide thorough proofreading and ghostwriting services to for those that require it.

I take a student-led approach to tutoring - working on areas that you identify for focus but able to contextualise it more broadly. I like to build a rapport with students and approach lessons as equals rather than a strict “student-teacher” relationship. We have a shared goal and should work together to get there! Having a more friendly relationship I find also encourages students to be more confident, allows me to tailor the lessons more to your needs, and makes it more fun for both of us!
For TEFL I specialise in professional / adult learners, drawing on my own extensive experience working in multinational companies and for the UK Government. I also really enjoy teaching slang, idiomatic and conversational English to help strong speakers sound even more fluent!
For Proofreading and Ghostwriting I can draw on my extensive experience of writing high-calibre English, including: Masters thesis; marketing materials; my own novel; and speeches for senior politicians, including the Prime Minister.
I have one year experience tutoring in the Netherlands and find that 45-75 minute is usually the ideal lesson time. Enough to cover key areas without students getting bored or tired!
