About Matt
I am a native English speaker who has lived and worked in Italy for many years. During a teaching career spanning more than three decades, I have worked with university students, researchers, professionals, and adult learners from a wide range of backgrounds.
I taught English at university level for over thirty years and have extensive experience helping adults develop the confidence and communication skills needed for professional, academic, and everyday situations.
Outside teaching, I have a longstanding interest in history, languages, travel, and lifelong learning. I enjoy learning about other people's fields of expertise and helping them communicate their ideas more effectively in English.
Students often appreciate my patient, supportive approach and the relaxed atmosphere of my lessons. My goal is to help learners develop both confidence and competence, whatever their starting point.

My teaching is based on a simple principle: the best way to improve your English is to use it actively and purposefully. Rather than following a generic textbook programme, lessons are tailored to your specific goals, interests, and professional or academic needs.
A typical lesson combines conversation, vocabulary development, listening, and targeted language work. Many of my clients need English for situations where clear communication matters: presentations, interviews, negotiations, meetings, and academic discussions. Others simply want to become more confident and fluent in everyday English conversation.
What sets me apart is my experience working with adults across a wide range of contexts — from university lecture halls and corporate boardrooms to one-to-one conversations with individuals who simply want to speak English more naturally and confidently. For more than thirty years, I have worked with learners at every stage of adult life: students, professionals, researchers, and people who have always wanted to improve their English but never found the right opportunity.
My lessons are designed for adult learners from intermediate (B1) to advanced (C2) level. Whether you need English for work, study, travel, or everyday life, the focus is always the same: helping you communicate with greater confidence, clarity, and ease in the situations that matter to you.

I studied with Matt several years ago, when I was preparing for a university entrance interview and needed to improve my spoken English quickly. I was nervous about the whole process, but from the first lesson I felt at ease.
What stayed with me was how naturally the lessons flowed. Matt has a way of structuring a conversation so that you are working hard without ever feeling like you are being drilled. We talked about real things — ideas, experiences, situations I might actually face — and the language came out of that, not the other way around.
He is also genuinely interested in his students as people, which makes a difference. I never felt like one of many; I felt like the lesson had been thought about specifically for me.
I would recommend Matt without hesitation to any adult learner who wants to make real progress in spoken English in a relaxed, intelligent, and genuinely supportive environment.I came to Matthys at 55, feeling that my English — though reasonable for an Italian who had studied it years ago — was not good enough to make the most of the trip abroad I was planning. I had lost confidence speaking it over the years, and I wanted to feel genuinely comfortable in real conversations, not just manage.
What I didn't expect was how enjoyable the lessons would be. Matthys has a gift for finding topics that engage you — we talked about travel, places we'd been, family, life experiences — and before long I realised I was simply having conversations in English rather than studying it. That, I think, is the point.
By the time I left for my trip, I felt ready. Not perfect, but confident — which is exactly what I had needed.View more recommendations
