About Maya

I am a Vancouver, Canada native, born and raised with a unique multicultural background. My mother is Japanese, my father is German, and I am fluent in both Japanese and French, with a basic understanding of German. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Psychology and Education at Soka University of America, while also studying Mandarin Chinese.

As someone who loves learning and teaching languages, I understand the challenges that come with it, and I can empathize with those who are struggling. However, as a native English speaker, I am confident in my language abilities and can assist you in any area of need, be it pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar, or more.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is highly personalized and consultative, with a strong focus on flexibility and adapting to the specific needs of each student. Having learned three languages and currently working on my fourth, I understand the challenges of learning a new language and can empathize with those for whom English is not their first language. As a Liberal Arts University student, I have developed strong skills in reading comprehension and writing, and I draw on this experience to help students improve their language abilities.

Typical Lesson Plan:
My lessons typically involve a combination of conversation, vocabulary building, and grammar exercises. I aim to create a comfortable and supportive environment where students can practice their language skills without fear of making mistakes. Depending on the student's needs, we may focus more heavily on specific aspects of the language, such as writing or pronunciation.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
As a part-time writing center assistant at my university, I have gained extensive experience in helping students improve their writing skills. Additionally, my personal experience with learning multiple languages has given me a unique perspective on language learning that I can share with my students.
