About David

My name is David Bromley, and I am a new university graduate from Western University. I have some experience tutoring through the non-profit, Pathways to Education, where I tutored high school students in an after school program in Regent Park. I am looking to become a teacher, and I feel that tutoring offers an opportunity for me to hone my teaching skills before entering teacher's college. As such, I will approach tutoring with a high degree of professionalism, while making learning more fun and inspiring than it often is in a classroom.

My name is David Bromley and I would love to be your tutor!

I come to tutoring with a University Degree and deep knowledge and skill in how to write essays, test preparation and can formulate any argument or presentation in written form.
I bring a lot of understanding, strategies and empathy to students who have learning challenges. In fact, I myself struggled and learned how to overcome my difficulties related to ADHD.
In helping ANY level child learn to read (elementary) or write (possibly at more senior middle/high school level) … my approach to teaching is 3-fold:
1. Be clear and provide interactive exercises and assignments that build a specific skill(s).
2. Ask and encourage questions to facilitate the learning process.
3. Make it fun! Incorporate games, competitions, challenges that are goal oriented so that the student can see their progress over time.
I have prepared two example lesson plans:
(a) Grade 3 student who is wanting to improve their writing skills
(b) High school student who wants to know how to approach and write an essay

Lesson Plan: Improving Foundational Writing Skills
Grade Level: 3
Lesson Duration: 30-40 minutes

Objective:
-By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a well-structured paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

Lesson Steps:

1. Warm-Up (5-10 minutes) – Sentence Stretching Game
-Start with a simple sentence (e.g., "The cat ran.").
-Ask the student to add details to make the sentence more interesting (e.g., "The fluffy, orange cat ran quickly across the green grass.").
-Encourage creativity and descriptive words.

2. Mini Lesson: Structure of a Paragraph (~10 minutes)
-Explain that a paragraph has three parts:
1. Topic Sentence – Introduces the main idea.
2. Supporting Sentences – Provide details, examples, or explanations.
3. Concluding Sentence – Wraps up the paragraph.
Show an example paragraph and identify each part.

3. Guided Writing Practice (~15 minutes) – Writing a Paragraph
-Provide a writing prompt: “Imagine you found a magical door in your backyard. Where does it lead?”
-Guide the student in brainstorming ideas.
-Help them write a topic sentence, then add 2-3 supporting details, and finish with a concluding sentence.

4. Review & Edit (5-10 minutes)
-Read the paragraph together.
-Ask questions like:
-Does the paragraph stay on topic?
-Are there interesting details?
-Are sentences complete and make sense?
-Encourage small edits for improvement.

5. Wrap-Up & Fun Challenge (Optional Homework)
-Ask the student to draw a picture of their story.
-Challenge them to write another paragraph about a new adventure.

b) High school student who struggles with how to approach and do essay writing

Lesson Plan: Conquering Essay Writing
Grade Level: 10
Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Objective:
-By the end of the lesson, the student will understand how to structure an essay, develop a strong thesis, and plan their writing effectively.

Lesson Steps:

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes) – Breaking the Fear of Essay Writing
-Ask: “What do you find most challenging about writing essays?”
-Discuss common struggles (e.g., not knowing where to start, structuring ideas, writing a strong thesis).
-Explain that essay writing is just organizing thoughts into a logical order—like telling a story with a purpose.

2. Mini Lesson: Essay Structure Breakdown (15 minutes)
Explain the basic essay structure:
-Introduction (Hook + Background + Thesis)
Body Paragraphs (Topic Sentence + Evidence + Explanation + Transition)
-Conclusion (Restate Thesis + Summary + Final Thought)
Show a well-structured essay and analyze its parts.

3. Guided Practice: Developing a Thesis & Outline (20 minutes)
Provide an essay prompt: “Should students have a four-day school week? Why or why not?”
-Guide the student in brainstorming pros and cons.
Help them develop a clear thesis statement (e.g., "A four-day school week would benefit students by reducing stress, improving focus, and allowing more time for extracurricular activities.").
Work together to create a simple outline:
-Introduction: Hook + Background + Thesis
-Body Paragraph 1: Point 1 + Example
-Body Paragraph 2: Point 2 + Example
-Body Paragraph 3: Point 3 + Example
-Conclusion: Restate thesis + Final thought

4. Independent Writing (10 minutes)
-Have the student write their introduction using the structured approach.
-If time permits, they can start the first body paragraph.

5. Review & Feedback (5 minutes)
Read the introduction together and check for clarity.
Ask:
-Does the hook grab attention?
-Is the thesis clear and strong?
-Does it set up the essay well?
-Provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.

6. Wrap-Up & Homework Assignment
-Ask the student to finish the first draft of their essay at home.
-Encourage them to review their work using a checklist before the next session.
