About Zachary

My name is Zachary Russell and I played 1sts basketball in 2022 and 2023 for Sydney Grammar School. I currently play casual basketball at Sydney University and for a club team in Marrickville. I coach an Easts basketball team and 5 kids in ranging ages 1 on 1. I am a stretch center that specializes in post-game; however, I am also a consistent shooter and strong dribbler.

  • At what age did you start practising this sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started practising basketball when I started highschool, at the age of 12. For most people this is very late to start a new sport however, after a sudden growth spurt I was determined to give basketball a try. After two years of playing the sport for fun at a very low level I decided that I wanted to improve my game. I worked with a coach 1 on 1 and practised everyday which, alongside regular gym sessions, eventually led to me representing my school at the highest level.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

My favourite sport is basketball, which I try to train everyday of the week as long as I have free time. I would like to discover volleyball as I enjoy the comradery of the sport and the way it improves hand-eye coordination.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue this craft?

I enjoy helping other people succeed in achieving certain goals, whether it be making it into a certain team, improving a certain skill or being able to beat their friends in a casual 1 on 1.
  • Do you have an achievement that you're particularly proud of?

I’m particularly proud of myself for persevering to make the 1sts team at my school, despite being at a major disadvantage having started training so late. I am similarly very proud of my brother, who I helped facilitate his love for the game from a young age and trained him personally and who is now playing at a state level.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better athlete?

By persevering to a set goal of representing my school at the highest level, I would be constantly keeping myself in check to ensure everything I was doing was helping me to achieve my goal. At times when I fell short, not playing as well as I would like to or not making a desired team, It would only push me to work harder because I knew it would eventually pay off.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

I would like to go for a jog with Lebron James and ask him what it was like having all the pressure in the world on his back straight out of highschool. Did he feel as if the pressure was necessary to make him the legendary player he
is today or did it have negative impacts in his game for example in his first finals as a member of the Miami heat.
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

I help people stay motivated by constantly reminding them of their dreams, their limitless potential and how far they’ve come already to reach the point that they are currently at.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I think what makes me a superprof is my personality and ability to create a friendly environment for my students, rather than an authoritarian one. I like to facilitate this environment first to gain the respect and friendship of my students, so they are more likely to have fun whilst learning alongside me.
