About Yasmin

I graduated in 2014 from the University of Oxford where I read English Language and Literature. My degree spanned a wide range of literary texts and periods, from Beowulf up to the 21st century, but my specialist areas of interest are Modernist poets, American women writers and the postcolonial. The following year I completed a PGCE in Secondary English at UCL Institute of Education and then finished a Masters in Contemporary Literature and Culture at King's College London, graduating with a Merit. I achieved 2A*s and 2As at A-Level in English, History, Economics and Drama. Outside of working as a full-time Teacher of English at North London independent school, I write a column for the Malay Mail Online focusing on political and educational issues affecting the youth.

I have over 8 years experience teaching English to secondary school students in a range of both independent and state schools, including Forest School, St Paul's Boys' School and St Marylebone Girls' School. I also have work experience outside the mainstream system as a Learning Support Assistant at the St Marylebone Bridge School, working closely with students with Special Educational Needs including dyslexia, autism and speech and language impairments. Since 2012, I have also worked as a private tutor in Oxford, London, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, tutoring students in A Level and GSCE English, English Literature and Creative Writing from the ages of 6-18. I have successfully tutored students for entry to St Paul's, City of London, Highgate, Harrow and Marlborough.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is highly personalised. I begin all my sessions with an initial consultation – identifying the student’s strengths and weaknesses as well as discussing the academic goals they are working towards and what they hope to achieve through private tuition. As a tutor, I am patient, engaged and friendly – my students know that they can ask me about anything they are having difficulty with and we will work towards a solution together. I like to approach my sessions in a structured way, while also allowing time for open and interactive discussion. I am genuinely passionate about the study of English Language and Literature and I aim to pass on the same enthusiasm and love of learning to my students.

Most often, I find students struggle due to a lack of confidence or because they are not being sufficiently engaged by the material as it is taught in school. I thus always try to connect text-book material to their own personal interests and work to create an environment where students are unafraid to challenge themselves. I try to instill in my tutees a positive and determined attitude towards learning that will help them succeed at all stages of their academic journey.
