About Kiara

My name is Kiara and I currently study French and Linguistics at Oxford University. I've always harboured an unconditional passion for anything related to language and literature, which is why I teach the subjects I do. Before going to university, I had experienced solely an impersonal and cold education system that cares for grades rather than scholarly growth, making my academic experience feel somewhat hollow and lacking. As a consequence, over the years I’ve cultivated a growing desire for a system that instead focuses upon the individual rather than the masses. When I joined the Oxford cohort, I found what I had been seeking: I became immersed in a world of passionate academia. And that is what I believe makes education truly effective: passion. When a tutor lives and breathes for their chosen subject, that enthusiasm is contagious and spreads to one’s students. I hope to inspire this same infectious interest in the subjects I tutor, and therefore, causing my own enthusiasm to create an easy and open atmosphere in which it is okay to ask as many questions as you desire, no matter how silly they may seem. I want my passion for education to nurture an environment in which students can flourish and develop their own command of the subject matter.

I have previous experience in tutoring, as I've been tutoring English Language and Literature since I was back in Sixth Form. So far, my creative and personal approach to teaching has proven rather fruitful with my students coming to enjoy our classes and to end up producing some fantastic work, either as a requirement for particular syllabus in preparation for exams, or just as exercises to improve fundamental skills such as grammar and reading comprehension.

About the lesson

Every student is an individual. Every student has their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and every student learns differently. Thus, my sessions focus upon the individual, and so in our sessions we will aim to develop a comprehensive list of the styles of learning that benefit you the most. In this way, we can work together to employ the most effective tactics in order fortify your knowledge. If you learn by listening, I can deliver almost lecture-themed classes; if you learn by memorisation, we can do memorisation quizzes; if you learn by developing and working through your own ideas, I can lead you through a maze of probing questions that are designed to get you to the answer. How we proceed in our classes is entirely up to you and how we can get you to learn best.

In terms of preparation, all of my sessions are planned in advance. However, instead of being ‘fully comprehensive’ lists, they are rather designed in terms of goals. For example, these will consist of what topics are covered, what areas of weakness are being targeted, and whether questions from last session are still being addressed. This is because of my familiarity with the fluidity of the learning process. In some weeks, we will cover all the goals contained in my plan; in others, some areas will require more time. There is no time pressure; we will work through the content at a pace that is suited to you.
