About James
I want to teach because I have a genuine passion for science and truly enjoy explaining scientific concepts to students who are eager to learn and improve. I take great pride in building strong relationships with my students and in witnessing those moments when they begin to make connections in their work and deepen their understanding.
Compared to working in a whole-classroom setting, tutoring students one-on-one or in small groups allows me to tailor my approach to meet their individual learning needs more directly—and I find this deeply fulfilling.

When teaching, the most important skill is the ability to make difficult concepts accessible and understandable. I train students to construct mental models, which enable them to explore theories independently and develop a thorough, lasting comprehension. Alongside this, I guide students in memorising essential facts, strengthening their core mathematical abilities, and mastering experimental techniques they are likely to encounter.
Once students have a firm grasp of the theory, I teach them how to apply their knowledge effectively to examination questions. This process involves three clear steps: first, interpreting exactly what the question is asking; second, identifying the relevant theoretical principles; and finally, structuring their response in a way that secures the maximum number of marks.
To support learning, I employ a diverse range of tools, including PowerPoint presentations covering key content, worksheets to reinforce understanding, online quizzes for self-testing, and detailed progress reviews to help students continually refine their performance.
Each of my lessons typically lasts one hour and fifteen minutes, which provides ample time to explore each topic in sufficient depth.
I have taught in several international schools across Asia since completing my PGCE, delivering lessons in chemistry, physics, and general science. I also hold a master’s degree and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Oxford.
My teaching focuses on the following subjects and courses:
• GCSE Chemistry and Physics (ages 14–16)
• IB Chemistry and Physics (ages 16–18)
• A-level Chemistry and Physics (ages 16–18)
