About Tim

I have taught English for 25 years, and this experience has given me not only a thorough knowledge of my subject but also a sensitivity to students' needs. I know how to pinpoint any areas of weakness and deliver engaging lessons to address these. I understand the balance between supporting and challenging my students so that their confidence grows along with their knowledge and ability. My lessons reflect my personality, and are designed to motivate my students and promote learning in a supportive, fun and engaging way.

About the lesson

I tutor Key Stages 1,2 and 3, 11+, GCSE English Language and Literature, and A-Level. I believe that the more interested a student is, the better that learn, so my lessons are designed to maximise student participation.

My lessons can help students to
- improve their reading skills, for example analysing language techniques and making inferences
- improve their basic writing skills, for example by varying their sentence structures and using punctuation correctly
- plan and write essays that argue and persuade
- make their creative writing come alive and engage the reader
- build their vocabulary, so they use more sophisticated word choices
- be more aware of essential spelling, punctuation and grammar, and avoid losing valuable marks

My lessons strike the balance between building students' confidence and challenging them to perform at their best.

I first got to know Tim when we were teaching together at a school in Japan in 2006. The main business of the school was to prepare young people for study at universities overseas, which involved training them in all aspects of English. Tim was popular with the students, and was able to develop a good rapport with those of different abilities and ages. He was never too busy to spend time with students and give them advice on an educational and pastoral basis. Tim was also popular with his colleagues, and was always willing to discuss and share teaching ideas. In addition, he had a reputation for being meticulous in his planning and delivering excellent lessons.
On returning to the UK, we have continued to be good friends, and he has been a source of support not only to myself but also to my children who like to get his opinion on different matters.
I highly recommend Tim as conscientious and diligent teacher.
