About Gregory
Hello!
I'm excited to help you improve your writing, textual analysis, research, and study skills, whether for AP, SAT, high school, or college-level work. I have a Bachelor's in Philosophy and English, with additional studies in History, Social Sciences, and Theology. My background has given me extensive experience in reading, writing, and analyzing complex ideas across the humanities.
Throughout college, I wrote on topics such as metaphysics, epistemology, political theory, and Western and Eastern civilizations. I studied major literary authors including Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, and Charles Dickens, enhancing my ability to analyze literature and communicate ideas clearly.
As a tutor, I focus on helping students become more confident and precise in their writing and thinking. I can help you with essay structure, research skills, reading comprehension, and SAT and AP exam preparation.
I have three years of experience teaching logic to middle and high school students, and I have also worked with college students, from freshman to senior, on writing and philosophy.
My goal is simple: to help you understand difficult material and express your ideas with clarity and confidence. I aim to make each session practical, focused, and productive.

My approach centers on the Socratic Method, encouraging students to think critically, question their assumptions, and explore ideas with wonder. I guide them to discover answers on their own through targeted questions, fostering deeper understanding. My method combines a flexible, freestyle approach that adapts to the unique needs and learning styles of each student.
When working on papers, I follow a structured yet adaptable plan tailored to the assignment. It starts with discussing the structure of the paper, whether it's a 5-paragraph essay, persuasive essay, or research paper, and the importance of outlining for organizing ideas effectively. Afterward, I help students define the focus of their paper: formulating a research question for research papers, defining a clear argument for persuasive essays, or choosing a focused topic. From there, we craft a strong thesis statement that serves as the foundation for the essay.
I also teach students how to conduct research, emphasizing how to identify credible scholarly sources, evaluate them, and cite them properly. Inspired by Mortimer Adler’s "How to Read a Book", I show them how to read critically and take effective notes to strengthen their arguments. We then focus on proper citation (MLA, Chicago, or Turabian) to ensure sources are properly credited and plagiarism is avoided.
We continue with the first draft, where I encourage students to focus on expression rather than perfection. We then move into revision, strengthening arguments and refining clarity and structure. Finally, we focus on proofreading, paying attention to grammar, style, tone, and readability, and finish with final edits to ensure the paper is coherent, consistent, and polished.
This method works anywhere from middle school to college. The depth and rigor are simply calibrated based on the level of the student.

Perfect! I'm a fourth-year undergraduate philosophy student who was struggling to meet a tight essay deadline. Before I could even start writing, I had to work through several dense sources.
Greg responded to my lesson request quickly and strategically set up a lesson plan to catch me up. Even on days when we didn't Zoom, he was responsive via email and equipped to provide useful reading/writing strategies that I will continue to implement with future assignments.
Greg's lessons are more conversational than lecture-based, so if you prefer the latter, he may not be the best fit. Talking about philosophy can be intimidating, but I felt comfortable asking questions and speaking up when I didn't understand something.
Highly recommend!- Hannah is a very insightful student who is always asking the right questions and has good intuition. The main thing she could benefit from is working on reading difficult texts more closely in order to better grasp the nuances of the author's arguments. With her strong intuition and thoughtful approach, I’m confident that with a bit of practice, Hannah will quickly develop the skills to master even the most complex texts.Gregory's response :

Greg is the hardest working and most diligent person I know. I've spent years with him talking about training and various different intellectual pursuits and its nothing short of his passion. Without end every single day he works towards bettering himself through these different facets of learning and skill. I think without his help and his motivation I couldn't have been able to graduate high school or make it as far as I have in university.
Gregory is a brilliant, well-read man with the rare ability to clearly explain difficult topics and concepts in a fascinating way.
I have known him for years, and am constantly impressed by his drive to become even better than he is, and his love for helping others improve.Gregory and I met almost five years back. He is a highly intelligent and well-spoken individual, having tutored me in the study of physical education and foreign language whilst on occasion testing me on matters of logic and rhetoric. He was patient and willing to meet me where I was whilst also pushing me to be better practiced and more educated. He is well disciplined and provides a good model to follow after in regards to intellectual advances.
Gregory is a very knowledgeable guy who's great at explaining hard concepts and helping you work through complicated tasks. I highly recommend him.
