About James

I am an experienced private tutor who has taught the following subjects:

G.C.S.E English Language and Literature.
Functional Skills English (Entry 3 up to Level 2).
I.G.C.S.E English Language.
I.E.L.T.S.
A-level English Literature.
Basic Grammar in Use (All Ages as well as International Students).
English as an Academic Subject (In preparation for, and during, University).
A-level Philosophy.
Proofreading for HE/Academic Study Skills.

I am a relaxed and enthusiastic tutor who demonstrates a patient, down to earth attitude to students and their needs. Before I began teaching full classes, I spent five years working in a 1:1 and small group capacity, engaging hard to reach children and young adults as well as with those with SEN requirements. During this time, I also worked as a Student Mentor, coaching and supporting young people to access and engage with education.

In addition to the experience I have gained through working in education, I also hold a BA in English Literature and an MA in Philosophy and Literature. Through my studies I developed critical reading, writing and interpretation skills to an exceptionally high standard. This is something I apply to my teaching, as I believe the development of these skills is essential to success in English subjects and the humanities, regardless of the level at which a student is working.

I am also able to work with students of Literature and/or Philosophy on study and research skills at undergraduate and A-level.

About the lesson

For GCSE/FS/A-level Literature, lessons are typically 50 minutes to 1 hour and focus on the development of reading and writing skills in general.

This method supports students to improve their overall ability to understand texts/analysis, allowing them to apply these skills to any course/framework in order to succeed. This method focuses on, but is not limited to:

- Close reading.
- Identification of techniques (metaphors, similes, hyperbole, personification, etc).
- Syntax.
- Context.
- Writing answers in a clear, concise way.

I have worked with students who are in school (11 - 16), in FE (16 - 25) and HE (18 - late adulthood). I tailor lessons to individual needs and have extensive experience with working with students who are neurodivergent.
