About Juan

I'm Juan, a poet from Cali, Colombia, and an educator who found his way into teaching through poetry.

My journey as an educator began with a poetry club I started at a school. As the club grew into an established program, I discovered the power of creating spaces where people could explore their voices, express themselves, and connect through language. That experience shaped my approach to teaching and continues to influence the way I work with writers today.

After years of seeing poetry take a back seat in my own life, I found my way back to it a few years ago. Since then, I've been actively growing my craft, exploring new forms of expression, performing and sharing my voice and my work. My practice is always evolving, and I believe there's something valuable about learning, experimenting, and discovering alongside others.

With my creative practice, I also bring over 13 years of experience in education and a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I've spent much of my career designing learning experiences that help people grow through curiosity and intention.

Whether you're writing your first poem, refining your craft, or finding the confidence to share your work aloud, I'm excited to help you explore what's possible.

My approach to teaching

I believe everyone has a voice worth exploring, and writing is one way to discover it. My approach combines poetry and creative writing with curiosity, experimentation, and reflection. I help students develop their own voice, explore what moves them, and find the words that feel true to their experiences.

With over 13 years of experience in education, a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a personal practice as a poet, I bring both educational expertise and a love for the creative process to my lessons. I create a welcoming, low-pressure environment where you can take risks, ask questions, play with language, and learn without worrying about getting everything right.

What a lesson looks like

Lessons are shaped around your interests, goals, and experience. We might begin with a conversation, a short writing prompt, or an exploration of a poem or writer. From there, we'll experiment with language, imagery, rhythm, storytelling, and different forms of expression. We'll make time to write, reflect on what's emerging, and explore ways to strengthen your work through thoughtful feedback. We'll also experiment with sharing your work out loud, and explore how delivery, pacing, rhythm, and pauses can open up new ways of understanding and connecting with your words.

These lessons are for curious people at any stage of their writing journey, from complete beginners who don't know where to start to experienced writers looking to deepen their practice. You don't need previous experience, formal training, or a collection of finished poems. You need curiosity and a willingness to explore.
