I follow the Student-Centered approach to learning because I am not teaching elementary students. I get to know each student to learn what skills they already possess. I know teachers and students play an equally active role in the learning process. My primary role is to coach and facilitate student learning and to meet the objectives according to the material. I measure student learning through both formal and informal assessments. These may include group projects, off-line projects, student portfolios, and class participation. Teaching and assessments are connected and continuously measured during instruction times. I use traditional teaching methods including class participation, demonstration, recitation, memorization, or combinations of these. I use non-traditional methods of delivery such as poetry, songs, video, art, or any other medium we negotiate beforehand.
I am competent to teach ESL as I grew up in a bilingual home. My family hosted exchange students from six different countries. I spent three months living / traveling in western Europe. I studied opera and performed in English, German, French, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Japanese. I have also tutored business, technical, and medical English to clinicians and scientists.
