About Amanda

I've worked with a range of students grades K-12+ who have had very different needs for the last 15 years (both as a tutor and within the school system). Many have had IEPs and needed individual attention to help them better their skills. I am good at tailoring lessons to students' needs and have a positive and quirky personality that allows me to have a good relationship with my students.

I use Zoom and online digital notebooks like OneNote in order to keep all of our lessons and my students' work easily accessible to both me and the student. I use a tech pen to make notes, highlight, and do math, and would recommend that students have touch screen devices to allow them easier use (though this is not strictly necessary and they can use a mouse or trackpad to do the above). The digital notebook allows me to provide additional materials if necessary that both I and the student can write on, highlight, etc. When completing a worksheet for school, all the student needs to do is send me a picture to upload onto their digital notebook so that we can get started. This allows for the student to be able to study off of this notebook when necessary. My first session is always an assessment to see what strengths and weaknesses my students have. For literacy or English skills, I do this by completing activities that assess skills based on state benchmarks. For math students, I complete an assignment and see what gaps exist in their math understanding. At the end of these sessions (especially with younger students) I offer the parents a summary of what I've noticed and ask if the student's primary teacher has given similar feedback. Then, I make a suggested plan for what skills to work on first and how often I would recommend the student take additional lessons. For English literacy and comprehension skills, I focus a lot on phonics for early readers and provide my own materials to help them learn phonetic rules in a way they will remember (usually with a reading and activities and that enforce one phonetic rule at a time). I provide my own reading passages to practice reading comprehension and level up skills as students better their understanding (for example, go from who, what, where, when, why, to characters, problems, setting, solution). For essay writing skills, I first teach the essay writing format and then focus on outlining. I assist with understanding and forming a concise thesis and structure the rest of the essay from there. Working on the first essay is always more collaborative so that the student understands how the pieces of an outline work. Once the outline is complete, the essay is mostly done and just needs transition sentences as well as some polishing to be completed. Most of the hard work is done in the outlining phase so that the actual essay writing feels easy. This helps students understand the importance of prepping instead of procrastinating and makes the essay writing feel easier. For math learning, to understand a concept, I teach the rule of that concept and then go through the steps to solve a problem with that concept. The first problem is a walkthrough of how to do it and write out the steps for them. The next problem, I guide the student through the problem by reminding them of the steps. The following problem, I have them try themselves (while explaining to me what they're doing) and direct them to the steps if they get stuck. I also ask the student if they see any patterns or "skips" to make their problem solving easier. By the end of the session, the student should be able to solve problems within that concept and we always do a review of the most important things learned as well as things to keep working on at the end of each session. I am good at personalizing lessons based on students' needs and have a positive and fun personality that allows me to have a good rapport with my students. Having worked with students K-12+ allows me to have a wider range of skills and exposure to many different kinds of students. Many of the students I've worked with have had IEPs.
