About James

As a professional actor, director, and Founder of The Makers Theatre, I have over a decade of experience supporting emerging performers at the start of their creative careers. I hold a First Class Honours degree in Theatre, and a Diploma in Voice for Music Theatre Performance from the London College of Music.

Recent credits include directing NewsRevue in the West End — the world’s longest-running live comedy show — and performing as a vocalist with the London Musical Theatre Chorus at Theatre Royal Drury Lane (Love Never Dies in Concert). I continue to work actively in theatre while coaching aspiring performers in acting, musical theatre, and audition preparation.

My coaching is rooted in professional practice, rigorous preparation, and a deep belief in creativity and play. I draw on my experience as an actor and director to offer practical, challenging, and supportive sessions that help performers grow in confidence, clarity, and technique.

Whether you're preparing for a drama school audition, working on acting through song, or building a sharper, more expressive performance, I tailor each session to your individual strengths and goals. This is not one-size-fits-all coaching — we focus on what makes you distinctive and how to bring that out in your work.

I regularly work with clients applying for foundation, undergraduate, and MA programmes, as well as those preparing for performances and exams, such as LAMDA. Sessions are available as one-offs or part of a regular coaching process, and typically run for 1hr, 90mins or 2hrs — delivered online, at your home, or in-studio.

Students I’ve coached have gone on to secure places at schools including Mountview, Oxford School of Drama, Performance Preparation Academy, Urdang, and Drama Centre London.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I have been practising and developing my methodologies for over 10 years and in that time I have been able to develop my understanding and application of performance techniques and practices. I believe my passion for the performing arts was born of my verbal dyspraxia. Having struggled in the early stages of my life to develop language and writing skills, the opportunity to express myself, in the alternative ways the arts can encourage, supported me to really thrive and overcome these initial challenges I faced. This forms much of the reason that I continue to enjoy facilitating and supporting the education of others alongside my professional creative career.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I am hugely affected by the work of so many and as a theatre maker am constantly inspired by those I am coaching, working with and facilitating. I particularly enjoy large scale ensemble theatre both as a maker and as an audience member, with a particular love for classic adaptations of Shakespeare and Greek mythology. Much of my training came through studying Jazz and Musical Theatre so both the performance and vocal influence of many of these great performers form much of my passion for the art form.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

    Adaptability. Kindness. Patience.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

It is in my nature to not let up on creative endeavours until they are finished and it is something I am constantly working to manage because actually taking a pause, a step back, can help you see the bigger picture of what you're trying to accomplish. So my advice is don't rush.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Whatever it may be from creating a piece of devised theatre, directing a musical, performing a silly song, or supporting a young person with their own passion and goals, being able to work doing the thing I love is simply fantastic!!!
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am very proud of setting up and running a number of projects and initiatives including The Makers Theatre that we continue to develop working with young people and early career artists.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Always. Students are always surprising me with their eagerness to learn and their shared passion for this wonderful world called show!
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Similar to the qualities I believe are vital for success in our area. Everyone is different so everyone will need a slightly different approach. This takes a lot of adaptability, kindness and patience.
