About Darl Tove

I've been writing all my life, as my father and uncle were writers--a news editor and poet, respectively. We owned a print shop where we printed books and I earned my allowance there. I started typing (on a real typewriter!) at age four. I pursued this passion of mine all the way through college, where I graduated Magna cum Laude (4.0 GPA) with additional honors specifically in English. I then did some Masters' level work, but finally had to join the job market myself. Since I earned my way through college as a full-charge bookkeeper, I was able to parlay my accounting and writing skills into a successful career as a non-profit and governmental grant-writer and administrator. My writing raised hundreds of millions of dollars for these projects. In order to be successful, I had to organize up to 100 pages of informational writing that could somehow engage a reader on some very dry topics. In this process, some of my writing was able to help municipalities (cities, counties, districts) on a national level. In the process, I have learned and developed a series of skills for succinct, successful and deadline-driven composition, as well as strong editing skills, laser-sharp attention to detail, and thorough knowledge of English composition. I hope to pass on some of these skills to those to whom it doesn't come easily and provide them with successful techniques I have acquired in my own learning.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude, with additional Honors in English from college, having completed a Bachelor's Degree and doing some Master's Level work. I won several college and national level prizes for my fiction, non-fiction and poetry compositions in college. I then began writing grant and business proposals for human service and government agencies and successfully won hundreds of millions for these entities in funding. I have over 35 years' of experience in English composition in a lot of different areas. I teach as how I was taught, using effective and easy-to-remember techniques and outlines for different kinds of writing; explanations for how to gather and properly use outside information to support your thesis; and, how to analyze material that can seem inaccessible, such as Shakespeare, poetry in general, complex essays, etc. I also teach how to properly cite information in compositions and know several preferred formats (such as MLA, AP, etc) as well as how to avoid any problems with using information gathered off the internet. My main goal is always to help the student find their own "writing voice" and to how they can enjoy the writing process. I hope I can help you! Typical English Composition Lesson Plan (Level: Junior High, High School or Beginning College) Topic: How to Write an Opinion Essay/Composition on a Chosen Topic Definition: Composition is the way we write: the rules of grammar that we follow and the styles we use to express our thoughts effectively. Objectives: To practice organizing an argument and minimum five-paragraph essay on a selected topic using proper grammar. Students will practice simple research skills to confirm information gathered for the essay using the chosen text (i.e. a reading assignment). Grade Level: Depends on the student. Learning Activities: Focus on an appropriate grade-level text that may include reading an essay by a famous author, or material the student is studying in school (for example, a novel such as "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Catcher in the Rye" or "One in a Million"). The student will then develop an opinion on the reading that they wish to express in their own essay. The assignment is to use a five-point outline to organize information; use information and quotations from the reading to support the body of the essay; and compose an argument to support the student's point of view. This plan can be adapted to each student's need and is a format they can use in the future to develop longer papers on different topics. Assignments will be assessed on the following: (1) proper use of the English language and grammar; (2) use of the material at hand (the reading) as substantiation of the argument; (3) overall understanding of the assignment; and, (4) attention to detail. The assignment can be used with junior high, high school and beginning college students (i.e. those taking English 1A or learning English composition as a non-English speaker).
