About Dermot
I’m a qualified secondary school teacher with over 10 years’ experience teaching Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert English and History, as well as EAL and Cambridge English exam preparation. Teaching isn’t just my job—it’s something I genuinely care about. I love helping students grow in confidence, understand their subjects more clearly, and realize that they’re capable of more than they think. Whether a student is struggling, aiming to improve, or pushing for top grades, my goal is always the same: to support them in a clear, encouraging, and practical way.
I’m a father of two, and that’s shaped my approach to teaching in the best possible way—patience, understanding, and knowing that everyone learns differently. Outside the classroom, I’m a big sports fan (especially Arsenal FC and Irish rugby), I enjoy running, listening to music, watching classic movies, and reading. I find that these interests help me connect with students and keep lessons engaging, relatable, and human.
Most importantly, I pride myself on being professional, reliable, and well-prepared. I take my students’ progress seriously and always aim to create a supportive, structured environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and improving. My focus is not just on better grades, but on building real confidence and strong skills that last beyond the exam.

My lessons are student-centred, practical, and focused on building confidence as well as results. I adapt my teaching style to each student’s level, goals, and learning style, whether they need support with the basics, exam techniques, or high-level refinement for top grades.
Teaching methods & techniques:
I combine clear explanations with guided practice, active discussion, and targeted exam strategies. For English and History, I focus on:
Breaking down texts, questions, and marking schemes in a simple, structured way
Teaching students how to plan, structure, and improve written answers
Building key skills: analysis, argument, comprehension, and critical thinking
Regular feedback with practical tips for improvement
For EAL and Cambridge exam students, I focus on:
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
Vocabulary and grammar in real, useful contexts
Exam practice, confidence-building, and fluency development
Lesson length:
Lessons typically last 60 minutes, but longer sessions (90 minutes) are available for exam preparation or intensive work.
Qualifications & experience:
I am a qualified secondary school teacher with 10 years’ experience teaching Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert English and History at all levels. I also have 10 years’ experience teaching EAL and preparing students for Cambridge English exams. I have worked with students of mixed abilities, from those needing extra support to high-achieving students aiming for top grades.
Who my lessons are for:
Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert students (all levels)
Students who want to improve confidence, grades, and exam technique
EAL learners (teenagers and adults)
