About Emily
Hi there! I am a certified and experienced ESL teacher and an adventurous American who has traveled the globe and shared her skills abroad. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics from Boston University and a master's degree in the same from the Free University in Berlin, Germany. My first experience with teaching was giving private English lessons to children in France in 2005. I later obtained my TESOL certificate from ITTT in 2010 while I was volunteering in a refugee English class in Denver. The following year I taught ESL to foreign boarding students at a high school in Maine. While living in Germany I taught adult English classes at public community colleges and children's English classes at an after-school club, as well as multiple private lessons. Additionally, I taught ESL to native French-speaking children and adults at a private school in Switzerland. I have also volunteer taught at English camps for refugee adults and children in Lebanon. Since then I've continued to teach online and give private lessons wherever I am. Like I said, I've been privileged to offer my skills all over the globe!
I love languages and speak both French and German fluently and have also studied Russian and Arabic. So, I understand what it's like to be a foreign language learner! That's why I can easily break languages down into their parts so that they are easier to wrap one's head around.
I have a gift for teaching. Everyone tells me so. Whether it’s teaching languages or just transmitting knowledge and skills that I taught myself, I always find a way to help people understand the subject matter, no matter how difficult or impossible it may seem to them. It's important to me to help my students get activated, make progress, and achieve their goals. My purpose is to provide a fun and safe environment where I can encourage students to start using what they have learned and to build the confidence they need to realize that they can, in fact, acquire a new language. Even my students can testify that they have achieved success by working with me!
I invite you to book a trial lesson with me and find out for yourself just how easy and fun it can be to learn English!

I gladly teach high school and university students who need help with English language or linguistics homework, working professionals trying to improve their business English skills, and other adults and seniors looking to travel or move abroad. I have also helped many students with test preparation for English language exams such as the IELTS or Duolingo tests.
One of the primary methods in which I was trained for teaching English as a foreign language and that I also find to be highly effective is the Engage, Study, Activate model. This involves first determining what students know about a certain subject and then introducing the new learning material. This is followed by the breakdown and practice of individual components of the target material. Finally, the activation stage allows students to demonstrate what they have learned while applying it to new situations.
Due to the nature of private lessons, I try my best to tailor my lessons to fit my individual students' needs. While my general approach involves a well-rounded study program that allows for a full mastery of the language, I will break away from the general study plan to focus on specialized topics wherever I see that the student needs it. This means that if I identify a grammar weakness, we’ll spend more time working on that grammar topic. Or if there is a pronunciation weakness, we’ll spend extra time working on pronunciation.

Emily is such a kind, supportive, and understanding teacher. She always knew how to adapt the lesson to how I was feeling that day. Even when I was tired or having trouble focusing, she somehow made the lesson enjoyable and helped me get back into it. I always felt comfortable learning with her and really appreciated her positive and encouraging way of teaching. I would definitely recommend her.
Emily is a great teacher—professional, patient, and genuinely dedicated to helping her students learn. She explains things clearly, takes the time to make sure you understand, and creates a comfortable and encouraging learning environment. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a supportive and professional teacher.
I’ve known Emily for over a decade. We first met through a language-exchange tandem, and I can honestly say she’s the best English teacher I’ve ever had. Thanks to her, I eventually became fluent in English.
What I appreciate most about Emily is how easily she can explain even complicated things in a simple, understandable way. She’s also excellent at editing texts and always gives very thoughtful feedback. She’s patient, flexible and understanding, and after two decades of teaching, she has a huge amount of experience working with people from all kinds of backgrounds. She also teaches several languages besides English.
Emily is always looking for new and creative ways to teach, and her positive attitude makes learning with her genuinely enjoyable. I can wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a great tutor.View more recommendations
