James completely turned around our son's English GCSEs. He supported him for only a couple of months prior to the exams. We were expecting a grade 4 and hoping for maybe a 5 in either literature of language. So we were over the moon when he got two 6s, And was actually very close to the 7 grade boundary. Our son has dyslexia and finds writing tough and also ADHD. We can only imagine what Alec might have achieved if James had supported him for a longer period of time. James puts lots of effort into planning sessions and gives detailed feedback with a study plan after every lesson.

Our experience working with James has been outstanding. We approached him to tutor our son in the two months leading up to his GCSE English Language and Literature exams. At that point, our son was feeling overwhelmed by revision across all subjects and had lost confidence, especially in English.

From our very first meeting, it was clear that James could make a real difference. Our son had gone into Year 11 with a target grade of 5, but by mid-year his forecast had slipped to a 3/4. He needed at least a 5 to access his preferred college course.

James immediately focused on identifying the strengths our son already had and showed him how to build on them. He introduced practical revision techniques early on and continued to guide and support him both during and between tutoring sessions. James always brought positive energy and a “can-do” attitude, which quickly lifted our son’s confidence. After each session, he also sent clear, straightforward pointers that were easy to follow.

Thanks to James’s guidance and encouragement, our son achieved his target grades in both English Language and Literature—and has now happily started college. We are truly grateful for the huge role James played in this success.

James helped me through both GCSE and A Level English, he laughed along with my jokes and helped foster passion for my subject, made the lessons fun, and helped improve my grades, would definitely recommend!

James helped me with English in years seven and eight. He is a really kind and helpful teacher. I really enjoyed studying with James. We used topics which I love, like history and current affairs, to build on my English and my understanding of how writers create their work.

James has been tutoring my two daughters in Year 8 & 9 for nearly a year. Both are neurodiverse and have very different needs. James has been brilliant at tailoring his approach and has built a great rapport with each of them. One of them lacked confidence and didn't enjoy English or think she was any good. In the space of a term her grades have improved and her confidence grown - to the point that she even likes English now. He also gives them both practical tools that can be used in exam conditions. I cannot recommend James enough.

I came to James in late September to improve my GCSE English Language grade. James was really helpful by modelling top level answers with me, and overall being highly supportive. We only had 10 lessons until my exam, but James helped me make a lot of progress. With James’ guidance I was able to improve my grade from a grade 6 to a grade 8!
