About Will
Unlike most tutors, I am a fully qualified teacher with thousands of hours of classroom experience, including nine years at Eton College, where I examined entrance tests. I have been teaching since 2004, including from 2010-2012 at Highgate School and from 2012-2020 at Eton College. At Eton, I marked the entrance exams and was also Head of the English at University Summer School, helping students prepare for Oxbridge entry. My experience at leading schools means I know exactly what examiners are looking for. My students have won places to Oxford, Cambridge and other leading universities, as well as scholarships to Westminster and similar schools. I have over a thousand hours of experience tutoring for leading agencies and can adapt to the needs of a wide range of students. Whether you need motivation and basic study skills or off-syllabus enrichment for Oxbridge, I can help. After winning a scholarship to Ipswich School, I went on to score 99% for a Distinction in my Advanced Extension Award in English and 3 A grades at A-level in English, History and Classics, all over 90%. I then graduated with a First from University College London in 2007 (when it was ranked first for English), achieving 95% for my dissertation on 19th-century American literature. I use the traditional method of Socratic dialogue to pinpoint exactly where my students need to improve. My questions keep them on the edge of their capabilities while also building confidence. I also focus on detailed, step-by-step guidance on how to improve essay structure and exam technique.

Perfect! I feel incredibly lucky to have had such a dedicated and inspiring English teacher. The lessons are always engaging and tailored to students’ needs. He explains complex grammar and vocabulary clearly, and his patience and encouragement have helped to build confidence in both speaking and writing, especially in academic exams. Will also go beyond the textbook, incorporating real-world topics and World Classics to make learning enjoyable and relevant. Thanks to his support, the English skills have improved significantly. I truly appreciate his passion for teaching and contribution to students’ progress. I highly recommend Will to anyone looking to improve his English.

Will is the only tutor who has genuinely helped me beyond the surface level. He’s highly adaptable to your learning style and especially skilled at identifying and improving areas of weakness. Thank you, Will!
I am delighted to recommend William as a tutor to Tutor Hunt. William was my colleague in the English Department at Eton College and I have known him for 8 years. For 4 of those years I managed him in my role as Deputy and Acting Head of English.
William is a respected scholar with particular expertise in Milton, Shakespeare, Melville, Cormac McCarthy, Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor and Marilynne Robinson.
His ability to differentiate to the particular needs and talents of individual students has always impressed me. He is excellent at preparing top “Oxbridge” candidates with challenging extension work but he is also supremely gifted at encouraging boys who lack confidence to discover their ability and achieve top grades. He has also taught on an Oxbridge summer school and runs his own annual state school exchange with Parmiters.
Will has been something of a mentor to me in my own teaching. I often ask him for advice and have observed his lessons to gain ideas. His methodical and strategic approach to IGCSE Language is inimitable.
One of his greatest strengths is his fastidious approach to examinations. He produces excellent resources which digest examiner reports and mark schemes, giving students a detailed and concise list of targets for A* performance. His resources are used throughout Eton's English department. It’s rare to meet teachers who are both scholarly and fully engaged in academic research yet also skilled at teaching in to specific public examination targets. Will is, in my opinion, one of the best teachers I have ever encountered in my career.
Students enjoy being taught by him because of his sense of fun (he transformed a dry grammar exercise into a game involving a gold medallion), his clear and punctual feedback on written work and his depth of textual knowledge. As a role model to young people, Will is exceptional. He is firm but kind and earns his students' respect through his thorough mastery of the subject and the schoolroom.
He has a full understanding of the development of young people as a father of five, weightlifting coach and competitor and the CEO of his own private tutoring business. He has full DBS clearance and First Aid certificates. Will takes special interest in the development of young people and appreciates seriously the full picture of their academic performance. Will’s calm, rational temperament and perceptive approach to dealing with young people has made him a source of wisdom for students and their parents. He is a principled and experienced teacher.
I hope this goes some way towards describing Will’s professional ability and exceptional calibre to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need more information.
Yours ever,
Sarah-Jane BentleyI am a teacher in Eton's English department. I had the privilege of knowing Will and watching Will teach whilst he worked here. He was roundly recognised as the department's finest teacher. The students adored his lessons and style. He got excellent results, consistently above Eton averages (and that is saying something). He is not given to waffling and gets straight to the nub of the matter.
