About Arseniy
Hi! I’m Arseniy, an IB graduate who took History, English Literature, and Global Politics as my Higher Levels, achieving a 7 (A*) in History. My choice of subjects meant that essay writing was something I had to do constantly. Over the two years that I spent doing the IB I learned what the examiners look for in essay subjects and how to achieve top grades even if you find yourself outside of your comfort zone. Especially with a subject such as History, the course is open in terms of what a student wants to focus their attention on. When I did these subjects, although there are certainly some case studies and topics that need to be known, a large proportion of my knowledge that I used came from researching topics I was passionate about and asking my teachers for resources to aid with that. Now, my goal is to show students the benefits of an academically curious mindset in the IB and other programmes, and how to convert that into knowledge that can be used in exams successfully.

History is a subjects that can be individually tailored an immense amount to the student studying it, largely due to the open curriculum of the IB. I believe by learning a diverse range of topics, and especially focusing on the topics that the student find interesting or feels passionately about makes the subject so much easier to learn! Luckily, the IB exam style is strongly in line with this philosophy, particularly in the humanities, where students are, in fact, rewarded for in-depth knowledge of case studies that are not typically studied. Therefore, I believe having this approach at the core of my teaching strongly benefits students and helps them achieve top grades. Additionally, with a strong focus on essay writing and exam technique, including coursework (e.g. Internal Assessment) tutoring, I aim to maximize the grade ceiling of the work produced by my students.
While I am comfortable teaching a majority of History topics, I am most familiar with the Russian Revolution, Inter-war Diplomacy in Europe, WW1 and WW2, Hitler’s Rise to Power and the German Government 1933-1945, The Spanish Civil War, China and Mao (1905-1970), and the French Revolution + Napoleon (with a special interest in Marxist interpretations and the influence of Enlightenment philosophers, particularly Jean-Jacques Rousseau).
