About Umar

I've always found genuine satisfaction in the moment a concept "clicks" for someone, and that shift from confusion to confidence is honestly one of the most rewarding things to be part of.

Having sat through the same exams I now teach, I remember exactly how daunting IGCSE and A-Levels can feel, and how much difference it makes to have someone explain things in a way that actually makes sense rather than just repeating the textbook.

I'm currently exploring a move toward teaching as a longer-term path, and tutoring is where that starts, not as a side gig, but as something I want to genuinely get right.

I care about my students actually understanding the material, not just getting through it, and I bring patience, structure, and a fair amount of enthusiasm for these subjects to every lesson.

In addition, my personal experience of having to actually go through the exams myself has led me to learn the methodologies to score well in them, and I look forward to passing these skills on to my students.

About the lesson

My approach: I focus on exam technique as much as content — understanding a topic isn't enough if you can't translate it into marks under exam conditions. Having gone through the Cambridge/British curriculum myself (A-Levels in Economics, History, and Marine Science), I know exactly where students typically lose marks, and I build lessons around closing those specific gaps rather than generic revision.

Methodology: Each lesson starts with a quick concept check, moves into applying it to past-paper style questions, then ends with structured feedback on exam technique — essay structure and argument development for English/History, applied reasoning for Economics.

Lesson length: Typically 1 hour per session, extended to 1.5–2 hours for intensive exam-prep periods.

Qualifications: LL.B (Hons) graduate from IIUM, currently completing a Level 5 TEFL Diploma. A-Levels graduate with straight A's. For my IGCSE's, I studied for eleven years at an international school in Penang.

Who it's for: Students at IGCSE (and below) and A-Level, in English, History, and Economics.
