About Stephen
I have a bachelors degree in English, a master's of arts in the teaching of writing, and a Ph.D. in English Education (Curriculum and Instruction). I taught English at the high school level and writing courses while a graduate student. I then taught for courses at the university level as a professor of curriculum and instruction, my specialty teaching teacher how to teach English. One of the courses was in the teaching of writing. During my 28 years at the university, I occasionally picked up freshmen level writing courses. After retirement, I have taught several freshman level writing courses at our local community college.

Discuss needs with students, monitor work to deduce needs and shape instruction to meet needs. English is about using language to share understandings between people. All that must be learned is directly related to this goal. Thus, instruction is shaped to meet students' needs in regard to improving communication ability and translating thought into readable and meaningful text.
