About Richard

I am a 60 year old special needs teacher with 32 experience, 22 years in a special school and with more than 11 years tutoring a wide variety of pupils outside school time.

I have a strong belief that progress can be made when learners have a strong relationship with tutor. He have heaps of experience dealing with reading difficulties and tutoring individuals with English at all levels using a variety of techniques.

As an English and History graduate I have in depth knowledge of the needs of learners.

About the lesson

I believe all learners are different. My lessons are tailored to individual needs.

In my lessons I try to do an introduction where I focus on a skill which may support the overall direction of the lesson. This will usually be be 10 to 15 minutes. This part of the lesson may also be based on something from a previous lesson which has been a barrier or challenge. I will then do at least 30 minutes responding to urgent difficulties a pupil may be having in school, college. etc. The last 15 minutes will focus on ways forward, particular changes a learner may be trying out in other studies. Lessons can be 90 minutes, and times will be adjusted to take account of this. I often find 90 minute lessons a lot more productive for learners.

I may set tasks which learners will do after a lesson and submit to me. Lessons may be through microsoft Whiteboard, a useful online game or simply working along side a pupil. If I use Powerpoint I aim to make it interactive, not simply being talked at.

I use a variety of tools and experience gained through 32 years of teaching to assess learning styles, any barriers to learning and create a productive relationship with my clients. A sensory assessment may identify an individual's most effective way of learning as well as finding ways of learning which get in the way of progress.

I take a flexible approach to teaching, allowing me to identify the small, incremental steps essential for helping each student progress in their learning journey.

I tap into individual interests, concerns, successes and strengths. I can also identify any missing basic literacy, numeracy, communication or processing skills which will hinder process.

I try where possible to tap into learner's interests and make activities be based on real life so people can see the relevance of what they are learning.
