About Joseph
Hi, my name is Joseph and I am a 6th degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo. I offer self-defense classes that come to you. I teaching a variety of classes including privates, groups, special needs, women’s self-defense, and anti-bullying. I teach my students how to properly defend themselves from any situation that they might find themselves in. Kung Fu San Soo is designed for battle and is purely a fighting art. This is important to understand because there are no tournaments due to the devastation that it can cause. Being strictly a fighting art everything that I teach is intended to immobilize and stop an attacker. San Soo uses a wide variety of different techniques including punches, kicks, throws, pressure points, and leverages. Each technique is intended to defuse a situation or severely damage an attacker. My students learn how to handle themselves on the streets and prepare themselves for the real world.
About Myself:
In 1998 I started training in Kung Fu San Soo at the age of 12 years old under Master Lawrence Rouse. Over the years I have not only trained at a constant rate but also has been teaching a wide demographic of students. For 8 years I was running classes at my Master's school in Van Nuys, the San Soo Center for Self-Defense as well as his second school, Playa Vista Martial Arts. When the school moved permanently to Playa Vista Martial Arts I started instructing full-time, teaching children and adult classes.
Working with children between the ages 5-12, teenagers 13-17, and adults 18-60+ I have very extensive knowledge on how to work efficiently with each student. Not only do I work with adults and children, I also do extensive work with students who are special needs and have disabilities. The wide range of students I have worked with provides a unique perspective on working with all kinds of students.
Currently, I am not only teaching at Playa Vista Martial Arts but also are teaching one-on-one privates at my student's homes. More recently I have been teaching self-defense at The Help Group’s after-school program, where I designed my classes based on each and every students needs. In addition, I have taught women’s self-defense classes at the Conejo Valley Adult School and currently works in the women’s self-defense classes at Playa Vista Martial Arts.
What is Kung Fu San Soo?
Kung Fu San Soo originated for use in military combat and uses techniques designed to swiftly disable an attacker. Different from the animal forms of Kung Fu the motto is "we fight like men not animals." Due to the devastation of this art there are no tournaments; since it is designed for real life situations. Unlike other arts San Soo is intended for battle with the purpose of swiftly disabling an attacker with as little moves as possible. San Soo is not dependent on muscle strength, instead it focuses on using complete body weight to take an attackers balance and space.

My teaching methodology is simple: Prepare for any situation that you may encounter in the real world. This is why I not only train my students in an open area but also out in the environment. For example, having you practice getting attacked while getting into your car. I also understand that everyone progresses in different ways, which is something important to understand while trying to understand and learn these skills.
I not only want my students to know how to understand how to effectively defend themselves, but I want them to have the confidence in doing so. Confidence is crucial and my goal is to not only teach you self-defense skills but to help you in building it.
While knowing how to defend yourself is important it is also essential to understand why and how it works. That is why I also go over very basic anatomy and physiology in order for my students to understand what they are doing.
