About Evelyn
I grew up in a house full of records, and reggae basslines were often the first sounds that pulled me toward music as a kid. Guitar came a bit later, once I realized I wanted to make those sounds myself instead of just listening. Teenage years spent in a scrappy pop punk band taught me more about rhythm and energy than any classroom ever could. That loud, hands-on beginning still shapes how playful my teaching style remains today.
Working with kids and teenagers means constantly adjusting my energy to match theirs, and I genuinely enjoy that challenge. Sitting still through long explanations rarely works, so I keep things moving, interactive and a little unpredictable. Nothing beats watching a shy kid grin the moment they nail a power chord riff for the first time. That spark of excitement is honestly why I keep choosing to teach younger students.
I still play in casual sessions with old bandmates, keeping that scrappy pop punk energy alive outside of teaching hours. Reggae also stays part of my personal practice, mostly because its rhythm never really gets old for me. Lessons often lean toward whatever genre gets a young student excited to pick up their guitar again. My hope is always that students carry that same excitement with them long after our lessons end.

Kids and teenagers learn guitar differently from adults, so I build every early lesson around short bursts of focused fun rather than long explanations. The very first class usually skips theory entirely, letting the student simply strum an open chord and hear what it sounds like. Reggae's laid back off beat rhythm gets introduced early, since its bouncy feel naturally keeps younger players engaged. Pop punk power chords come soon after, giving students something loud and satisfying to play almost immediately.
Once a student feels steady holding chords, I start mixing in simple palm muting to add texture to their strumming. Reggae's skank rhythm and pop punk's driving downstrokes offer two very different feels, and switching between them keeps lessons from feeling repetitive. I use call and response games often here, where I play a short pattern and the student echoes it back. This builds listening skills quietly, without turning practice into something that feels like homework.
Younger students especially need small, visible wins to stay motivated across weeks of lessons. I break every new skill into tiny, achievable steps rather than expecting quick mastery. Songs picked by the students themselves almost always drive practice better than anything I could assign. My focus throughout stays simple, keeping guitar feeling like play, not pressure, for as long as possible.
