Lesson Plan: Basic Math & Reading for Kindergarten Objective: Math: Students will be able to recognize numbers 1-10 and understand simple addition. Reading: Students will recognize sight words and begin to blend simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Materials Needed: Flashcards with numbers 1-10 Counting blocks or small objects (e.g., buttons, buttons, or counters) Paper and crayons for drawing and writing Sight word flashcards (e.g., "the", "and", "is", "cat", "dog") Whiteboard and markers Worksheets for simple addition and word tracing Introduction (10 minutes) Welcome and Review: Start by greeting the class and doing a quick review of previously learned material, like counting from 1-10 and any sight words they’ve already worked on. Math: Show flashcards with numbers 1-10 and ask students to say them aloud. Reading: Display sight word flashcards and have students repeat the words aloud with you. Main Activities (20 minutes) Math Activity: Counting and Simple Addition (10 minutes) Counting Practice (5 minutes): Show flashcards with numbers 1-10 and have the students count aloud. Use counting blocks or small objects and have students count them together. Simple Addition (5 minutes): Introduce the concept of simple addition using objects (e.g., "If I have 2 blocks and you give me 1 more, how many do I have?"). Do 3-4 simple addition problems using blocks. Have students repeat the process with their own set of blocks. Reading Activity: Sight Words and CVC Words (10 minutes) Sight Word Practice (5 minutes): Hold up sight word flashcards and have students read them aloud. Practice the words by using them in short, simple sentences (e.g., “The cat is big” or “The dog is red”). CVC Word Blending (5 minutes): Introduce a few simple CVC words (e.g., cat, dog, bat). Have students sound out each letter, then blend the sounds together to form the word. Use a whiteboard to write the words and ask students to trace them. Practice & Reinforcement (10 minutes) Math Worksheet (5 minutes): Hand out a worksheet with simple addition problems (e.g., 1+2, 2+3). Let students solve the problems with counting blocks or by drawing pictures. Reading Worksheet (5 minutes): Give students a worksheet with sight words to trace and color. Ask them to match pictures to the correct sight word (e.g., a picture of a cat for the word "cat"). Closing (5 minutes) Recap what was learned today in both math and reading. Ask the students to share one thing they learned or one word they remember. Give praise for participation and effort. Hand out a simple sticker or small reward for their hard work.
