  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    Taking each question in turn:

    1) I developed an interest in the law during my a-levels and fell in love with the subject. Even at that early stage in my studies, I was fascinated by the impact the law had on peoples' lives. Naturally I worked hard to get the best results and finished my law A Level with a grade A.

    2) I began privately tutoring (non-law subject might I add!) when I was still in college. However, it was during my university studies when I decided to put all my effort in to teaching law at graduate and post-graduate level. It has been an immense privilege to support, nurture and encourage students' of varying abilities. The satisfaction when a student finally understands a tricky topic is incomparable.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    1) I specialise in teaching law - whether that be at a level stage, undergraduate, LL.M level and/or for the Barristers' Training Course. Having worked as a visiting law lecturer at University, I am up to date with the core subjects.

    2) My principal aim when tutoring law is to clearly define the outcome the student is seeking to achieve. Once this is clearly defined, I can then prepare and direct all my energy in to obtaining the desired outcome. For instance, in my Barristers' tuition sessions, the outcome may be to pass the BSB Centralised exams. I will then work collaboratively with the student, teaching the most examinable topics including working on exam technique and developing confidence. To date, I have had a very high pass rate for students who have previously failed the centralised exams before my intervention and support.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    Two people come to my mind: the first is my former a level politics teacher, who taught me the importance of persistence and to have courage when faced with setbacks. There is a great deal of commitment required when studying, so my teacher's advice was spot on.

    The second is my international law teacher on the LL.M, who taught me how to critically analyse text and material. Critical analysis is by its very nature difficult to do, and developing the confidence to do it, significantly improved my grades.

    I deploy these lessons during my sessions with students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Empathy, patience, reliability, and preparation. I hope that my students will agree that I demonstrate these qualities in every session and the way I conduct my work.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    Persuading Baroness Hale (the first female Justice of the UK Supreme Court) to take a picture after a tiring and stressful evening. More on that a little later!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    Challenge is a good thing. Without it, there is no personal development or growth.

    With that being said, the challenge/ difficulties in studying law in the early stages is confidence. Students often struggle with understanding the bigger picture and my job is to make that process easier. If that means explaining a concept in several ways, then so be it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    My passion is teaching and advocacy. I enjoy public speaking and written advocacy, which I find stimulating and exciting.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

    The following:

    My professional can-do attitude;

    my high success rate with students, who have previously failed exams;

    my reliability when delivering sessions;

    integrity;

    and my strong interpersonal skills.
