I go by the concept of understanding the basic outline of something and after having a strong foundation, going more deeper into a topic. Getting an overall picture of what you're about to tackle in the beginning itself will provide us with a specific destination point we've to reach and won't seem like endless drawling pages of printed information. I also pay attention to make the class more interactive and sometimes go by the method of switching roles with students, thereby enabling them to exhibit their academical prowess. More than rote learning, visualisation of the concept and grasping it is the crux of all academics, is what I believe.
