About Sophia

Hi! My name is Sophia, and I’m a high school student with several years of experience teaching, mentoring, and creating educational opportunities for children and youth.

I’m the founder of STEM For The Future, a youth-led nonprofit focused on accessible educational programming. Through the organization, I’ve helped develop and lead youth programs and worked with community and educational partners.

During the Alberta teacher strike, STEM For The Future partnered with Mount Royal University in Calgary to provide programming for students, giving me experience helping coordinate learning opportunities outside of the traditional classroom.

I’m also heavily involved with FIRST Robotics! I have founded and helped lead FRC and FTC robotics teams and mentor younger students participating in FIRST LEGO League (FLL).

Robotics has given me extensive experience explaining difficult concepts in approachable ways and fun ways, encouraging students through challenges, and adapting how I teach to different learning styles.

Outside of academics, I have experience as a Teaching Assistant for Jazz and Acro dance classes, where I worked directly with younger students in a structured class environment. I used to be a competitive dancer where I had the opportunity to dance at Disneyland!

Literacy is another area I’m super passionate about. I founded Brick by Brick, a youth-led community initiative that works to expand access to literacy through projects such as building and stocking free community libraries!

As a student myself, I understand that school and testing can sometimes feel overwhelming. I aim to be an approachable older mentor while still providing structured and professional tutoring.

I’m especially passionate about helping younger students build confidence, feel comfortable making mistakes, and discover what they’re capable of.

About the lesson

My lessons combine academic skill-building with confidence building.

I break reading, writing, grammar, and test-prep concepts into manageable steps and adapt lessons to each student's needs. For students with test anxiety, I use practice questions, test-taking strategies, predictable routines, and low-pressure practice tests to help assessments feel less overwhelming.

A typical lesson includes a short review, focused instruction, guided practice, and independent practice. For test preparation, we identify areas for improvement, work through sample questions, and develop strategies for approaching difficult questions and managing time.

As a high school student myself, I understand how stressful academics and testing can feel. I combine that current student perspective with years of experience teaching and mentoring younger students. My goal is for students to leave tutoring stronger in English and more confident in themselves as learners.

My lessons are designed for Kindergarten through Grade 6 students seeking support with reading, writing, grammar, comprehension, homework, test preparation, or academic confidence.
