About Jackie

I was a classroom teacher for 25 years, teaching English, science, health, and physical education at the high school level. I have also proctored civil service, GED, and other standardized tests, written course curriculum, and taught test preparation courses. Throughout my years as an educator, I have done freelance tutoring in all subjects. I also worked as a homebound teacher for seven years for students K-12. This required me to go into people's homes and instruct across students' schedules, so I am flexible, versatile, and comfortable in new and challenging situations. Currently I am tutoring a home schooled student in all subjects; her goal is to return to a brick and mortar school situation.

I have taught hundreds of students over the years, and the majority of my students make significant progress, including passing grades, high school graduation, passing difficult courses, improving test scores, and earning GED certificates. I have also done ESL tutoring work with international students at the high school and college level. Several of the college students I worked with were accepted into American graduate schools because of our tutoring sessions on applications and essay writing. The unique one-on-one nature of tutoring makes it rewarding for me and for the students.

About the lesson

I have a BA in English from Michigan State University, +30 Masters level credits, and I'm working on my dissertation for a PhD in Teacher Education, also from Michigan State University. I have specializations in English education, literacy, and research.

I taught high school English for 25 years and since then I have been teaching teachers at MSU and tutoring K-College students on the side. I am a student-centered tutor. I approach every student and every lesson from an asset perspective, focusing on strengths and using those to build confidence and experience in order to reach academic and personal goals. I use creative methods and innovative strategies to engage students and keep them interested, as well as contemporary literature and resources. I take the time to get to know my students so I can incorporate their hobbies, interests, and funds of knowledge from outside of school into our lessons.

I am consistently patient and kind, teaching with love to reach the whole person. I set high standards and provide the scaffolding and support to systematically reach those standards. I start with the basics and build a foundation that will enable us to eventually reach higher order thinking skills and work on projects and creative methods for students to apply and show what they know.
