About April
I am entering my seventh year as the lead classroom teacher for grades 8th-10th. I also teach Composition I and II at the collegiate level. Before earning my degree, I was a tutor in a Title I school. My early classroom experiences allowed me to gain tangible teaching skills before completing my degree. Because of this, I believe I have a better understanding of the most important aspects of education: meaningful lessons, mastery over memory, and memorable experiences.

As a teacher, I aim for mastery in subject matter rather than quick memorization. In order to do this, I create lesson plans that connect real-world experiences with classroom exercises. Students gain knowledge through doing rather than just listening. For example, a lesson focused on vocabulary mastery would include the following:
1. The vocabulary word would be introduced to the student using words, pictures, and symbols.
2. The student will brainstorm and write anything they already know about the word.
3. I would model synonyms, antonyms, and sentences that are appropriate for the word.
4. Students would then create their own sentences including visuals to demonstrate their understanding of the word.
5. Assessments would include the word being used in a variety of sentences with the student choosing the best sentence that shows the correct usage of the word.
Lessons are geared towards middle and high school students. I am also experienced in Creative Writing, Comp I and II.

April Lawrence is a wonderful teacher! She is thorough in her lessons and is able to reach her students on whatever level they may be at academically. She is compassionate about an individual's learning ability and style! I know from personal experience with my own child that April goes above and beyond to be certain her student's understand the material that is given to them. I highly recommend her!
