Teaching is my passion! I am certified in ESL and Orton Gillingham Approach for Reading skills and phonics. I have been teaching this approach for 4 years with great success. Over the years I have worked with many ESL students, and have found that Orton Gillingham Approach works very well for this purpose as well when paired with ESL specific accommodations such as visual aids, and physical gestures. This approach teaches reading, writing and oral English language acquisition simultaneously.
This program is for anyone from kindergarten to 99 that wants to learn to read, write and speak the English language.
A typical lesson would include the alphabet sound deck for letter recognition, picture clues and sounds. Sight words would be introduced daily. It would then focus on 1 letter per week for younger students and paced accordingly for older students. After introducing a new letter and sound, we would learn how to write the letter, both upper and lower case. There would be dictation where I say the letter name or sound or picture clue and the student would write the corresponding letter. When enough letters have been taught, we will start to include sounding out CVC words and writing them. We will work our way up to simple sentence dictation and will integrate methodology as the student progresses, such as rhyming, word families, phoneme counting, syllabication and blending. Once the student is fluent in all the above skills, I would apply the Writing Alive program to instruct further on writing skills such as; Parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, paragraph format and organization.
