About Sylvie
Hi, I'm Sylvie — a second-year Law student at SOAS, University of London, with a genuine love of English that goes back to my A-Levels, where I studied English Language and Literature alongside Modern History and Politics. Since then, I've kept writing and editing at the centre of what I do: I currently write for The Spirit, researching, pitching, and producing articles across news, features, and opinion, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how to communicate clearly, structure an argument, and get the tone exactly right for the audience — the same skills that sit at the heart of GCSE English. I bring that same care and attention to detail into tutoring, helping students build confidence in both their analytical writing and their creative voice. I'm patient, organised, and genuinely enjoy breaking down tricky texts and mark schemes into something manageable, and I tailor every session to the student in front of me rather than teaching from a script.

I offer friendly, focused GCSE English tutoring for students in Years 9–11, covering both Language and Literature papers (AQA/Edexcel/OCR — state which you teach). My approach centres on exam technique as much as English skill: we start with a diagnostic session to pinpoint exactly where marks are being lost, then work through mark-scheme-focused strategies, close reading and annotation practice, and regular timed past-paper questions with detailed, examiner-style feedback. For Literature, I provide tailored notes on set texts like An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, and the Power and Conflict poetry anthology, built around what each student actually struggles to recall. Lessons run for 60 minutes (extending to 90 minutes for timed practice closer to exams), typically weekly with more frequent sessions available in the lead-up to exams. I've tutored students from those needing to secure a solid pass grade to those aiming for the top 7–9 grades, and I tailor each session to the individual rather than teaching from a fixed script.
