About Alexander

I have been a private tutor for over 10 years. I've specialized in high-school-level maths & sciences due to demand, but have tutored students at levels from grade 6 to first-year University & specialized college courses (ex. statistics, engineering, chemistry). I love to learn, I am always seeking new ideas and new ways to think about old ideas, bringing that passion to how I teach my clients. For me, tutoring is not just about explaining curriculum-based information; tutoring is a mentorship, as a tutor I want my clients to see how what they're learning is relevant to their lives and help them follow the path best suited for their goals.

I am a Brock University Almuni. I studied Mathematics and Computer Science, with some time spent concentrating on Mathematics education. My focuses have been the Maths & Sciences but I also have a variety of academic interests including language, music, psychology, design, and many more.

About the lesson

Above all else, I ask my students what they are looking for from me and how they would best learn. Everyone has different needs and I trust my students to know themselves and their needs. I regularly ask my students to choose between teaching methods based on how they think they would learn best. If they defer to me, I draw on years of experience to prioritize as below.

I teach based on a hierarchy of needs and importance:
1. If a student has assignments due or overdue, get them caught up. If a test is upcoming, make sure they're ready for it.
2. If a student is behind on concepts learned, especially from previous years, fill in those gaps. Lacking that foundation in knowledge is likely the cause of current learning difficulties. This can take a lot more time than expected and does require an increased time investment for both of us if my students want it.
3. Keep students current on their lessons so they do not start, or continue, to fall behind their peers
4. Get students ahead, teach them what they will need to know in the future so they have a head start to set them up for future success.

To strengthen understanding at each step, if we have the time, I find ways to make lesson relevant to a student's past, present, and future. I will delve into more detail, more angles of approach, and and more examples as needed to connect students with the material. I will also assess which material is less important so we can allocate time and focus efficiently.

My charges may be reduced for a student who requires many hours, who refers new clients to me, or who requires tutoring with courses that require a lower workload or I am more familiar with.
If I have to significantly prepare for sessions (e.g. you want full lessons and exercises provided, or it's particularly difficult or dense material), my rates may be higher.
