About Keerththana

I am a young commercial lawyer with approximately 8 years experience preparing students for high school English assessments and examinations. Having attended a highly competitive selective school in Melbourne, I am aware of the pressures students face in high school and tailor my teaching to assist students in preparing and performing under challenging conditions, while providing the much needed support for longer-term development. I have also taught English to refugee and recently migrated children, and other primary school aged children who need support completing homework or wish to build their confidence in English at school.

About the lesson

English is highly subjective, and requires development of ideas and opinions rather than clear-cut answers. For this reason, my objective is to empower students to think through and present their ideas with confidence and clarity.

To achieve this, I generally run classes as two-way conversations which encourage involvement in the learning process and the sharing of ideas and attitudes about the content material. In my experience, this is a highly effective and efficient approach to to assisting students to quickly understand, process and apply content, and form their own ideas and questions about the material. It also generates important feedback about the content and approach to learning necessary so that we can modify these together as we go.   It is the method of learning which I believe is most difficult to achieve in conventional classrooms, and which is most essential to succeeding academically and in life generally.

Although discussion is my preferred style of teaching, I do use a combination of teaching methods which are tailored to the student, depending on:  

a. the learner’s own strengths and preferences for learning in general (i.e. some students prefer demonstrations and examples, others prefer lecture-form learning)
b. the content or material being learned (i.e. an overview of the themes of a book might be provided in lecture-form, with essay topics learned in discussion)
c. the learner’s broader learning objectives (i.e. to become comfortable in essay writing vs. pass an exam next Tuesday)
d. the learner’s current English skills, abilities and interests (i.e. I have taught on comic books and films as a means of building student engagement in English)

Details

Please note that rates depend on the student level (and consequently, the level of preparation and support required to be provided). VCE students are $50/hour, as I will need to read assigned texts, prepare sample essays, correct written work outside of lesson times, and so forth.
