I now have four years experience teaching math, science, and English literature and language skills at an academy in Seoul, South Korea. In my four years of teaching I’ve learned that individual attention is often the key to releasing a student’s potential. The opportunity to target and develop skills that are difficult to learn in the classroom is why tutoring can have such a powerful impact. By engaging deeply with a subject in a one-on-one setting an effective tutor can foster not only knowledge but the confidence and communication skills to apply it. This is why I so firmly believe in a student-centred approach to teaching. I enjoy getting to know and personally engage each of my students in a way that incorporates their interests into the lessons.
To this end, I try to follow five key principles: fundamentals, progressions, activities, repetition, and evaluation. Observing these steps helps me keep my lessons flexible while also achieving consistent results. As head teacher of my school for three years I always encouraged my staff to be focused but adaptable, to teach but not dictate. The traditional didactic model of teaching does not work in tutoring; learning needs to be a conversation and the student needs to feel listened to.
