About Ed
I have several years' experience of private tutoring in English, History, Politics and Sociology, and English as a Foreign Language. At university, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and International Relations with First-Class Honours and a Master’s Degree in International Relations with a Distinction, both from the University of Bristol. My passion for tutoring comes from having seen first-hand the transformative impact that extra care and attention can have on a student's confidence, self-perception, and academic achievement. At a time when so many students' needs are not being met within schools, I want to be there to give the extra boost required to push students to the next level.

My approach to tutoring is based on empathy, patience, and taking the time to develop personalised lesson plans that inspire passion and unlock the potential of every student. This is based on 5 years of experience as a freelance private tutor in various subjects, as well as in time spent working in academic and pastoral support roles in a Sixth Form College. My lessons usually last for an hour but this can be adjusted based on student needs. I have mostly worked with students who struggle with the subject either due to unrecognised accessibility needs, low confidence, or difficulties with the rigidity of the school curriculum. However, I am just as comfortable working with high-achieving students that want to take their work to the next level. In my first lesson with any student, I will focus on identifying the specific things they struggle with and develop tailored tasks that combine understanding of required content with building confidence in these areas. Rather than taking this initial conversation as a rigid guide, in future lessons I always check in with how they feel about these struggles, whether the methods we are using to address them need adjusting, and if new problems have emerged that they hadn't realised before. From my experience, students respond best when they are treated with respect and given the space to develop their maturity alongside their grades. Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed in a supportive environment, and with my tutoring they will get it.

Ed was very helpful in tutoring my son.
My son felt that he learnt more in a few sessions with Ed than he had in class, finding the one to one interaction much more useful.
Ed is very friendly and is able to communicate well and i think he would be able to build up a good rapport with any youngsters .
I highly recommend himI took classes with Ed during the whole of last year, and it improved my level tremendously. Ed's teaching style is laid back yet rigorous, relaxed but also energising. With well planned lessons, I always felt Ed pushed me to the best I could be. On days when I didn't have the energy, we went slower so I could understand; when I was on the ball, Ed pushed me to the max. He's a great reader of energy levels, a great, patient incentiviser, and an all-round lovely teacher. I feel very lucky to have been able to study under him.
