About Tom
I am approaching my second year as a Politics and International Relations student at the University of Warwick, one of the UK's top seven universities. My degree is nearly entirely essay-based, and I have received multiple firsts on these essays in my first year.
I achieved an A-level in English Literature alongside two grade 8s at GCSE, giving me a thorough and recent understanding of exactly what examiners are looking for at this level, as well as a passion for the subject.
I know how much pressure is on students within these exams and have experienced the stress firsthand. With the knowledge I have now, not only can I help people in my situation academically but also reassure them and give them the confidence to thrive and seize future opportunities.
My approach is patient, structured and tailored to the individual student. I was often frustrated myself with some of my own teachers that read off slides and made English feel like an almost impossible memory test. Instead, I will help my students understand the mark scheme and texts on a deeper level, which will most definitely set them ahead of the majority of students.
Sessions are flexible and can target specific weaknesses, cover a full topic area, or provide consistent support across the course.

I like to first assess where my students are at in relation to English GCSE as a subject, to ensure they have effective lessons tailored to their own needs and desired outcomes.
Lessons are 60 minutes to get the most out of the students' capabilities and we can discuss feedback thoroughly. Within these lessons, I take an engaging approach to the subject where the quality of creativity in English can be explored.
Whilst doing this, we will be learning directly to understanding the mark scheme and applying our work to maximise marks (AQA and Edexcel), with advice on how to set yourself ahead of the majority of students.
I will have a relaxed and personable relationship with students to connect them with the subject where their teachers may be failing to do so, whilst also making sure we have the motivation to work as hard as we can within the 60 minutes.
