About Lucy

Hi! I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at Johns Hopkins University with over 4 years of tutoring experience. I’m also a UPenn-certified tutor trained in Metasocratic tutoring, which means I focus on helping students build strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, not just memorize answers. In addition to working with students across different academic levels, I’ve also gained valuable experience teaching elementary schoolers through volunteering, which taught me how to make learning engaging, patient, and accessible. I’m passionate about creating a supportive environment where students feel confident asking questions, overcoming challenges, and reaching their goals.

My teaching method and techniques:

A typical lesson plan:
1. Check-in and goal setting: I begin by asking what the student needs help with and what they want to accomplish that session.
2. Quick diagnostic: I assess their current understanding to identify gaps, misconceptions, or areas of confusion.
3. Direct instruction and guided discussion: I explain key concepts clearly, then use Socratic-style questioning to help the student engage actively with the material.
4. Practice: We work through examples together, starting with support and gradually moving toward more independent application.
5. Feedback and correction: I review mistakes in a constructive way and show how to approach similar problems correctly.
6. Wrap-up: I summarize the main takeaways, reinforce strategies, and set a plan for what to review next.
